Food with cancer-causing dye recalled in Britain

Saturday, April 30, 2005

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced a recall of foods containing banned dyes which increase the risk of cancer. The food products were sold at the Tesco, Waitrose, and Somerfield supermarkets.

A Bristol company called “Barts Spices” found the illegal Para Red substance in their Barts Ground Paprika, which was sold in 48g and 46g jars with a “Co-op” label. The batch codes on the affected products are 5032 and 5089 (expiration Dec 2007), and 5075 (expiration February 2007).

Tesco also found that their 130g package of BBQ rice cakes (expiration November and December 2005) contained both Para Red and Sudan I.

“It would be very prudent to assume that it could be a genotoxic carcinogen,” FSA scientific advisers told reporters.

“As a company committed to supplying only the very finest quality food ingredients, we took the immediate decision to withdraw our ground paprika spice from all outlets selling the product and advertised a product recall in the national press,” a Barts Spices spokesman said in a statement.

Sudan I is only authorized for industrial use to colorize petroleum products, such as shoe polish. Para Red and Sudan I are banned under the British Colours in Food Regulations of 1995.

Britain last went through a major food recall in February, when Worcester Sauce was found to contain chili powder dyed with Sudan 1.

Four new breeds in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

This year, four breeds of dogs are competing for the first time in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, United States.

The new breeds making their Westminister debuts this year, are the Plott, a hunting hound originally bred by two German immigrant brothers in North Carolina; the Tibetan Mastiff, once described by Marco Polo as “tall as a donkey with a voice as powerful as that of a lion.”; the Beauceron, a herding dog originally bred to herd flocks of sheep in France, later used to sniff out landmines and send messages during the World Wars; and the Swedish Vallhund, a breed dating back to the time of the Vikings, used on farms to catch vermin, herd cattle, and as a guard dog, noted for its double coat and harness markings.

This brings the number of unique breeds competing in the famous dog show to 169.

The Plott, the Beauceron, and the Vallhund were shown on Monday. The Tibetan Mastiff will be shown tonight as part of the Working Group.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

Am I Too Old For Plastic Surgery?}

Submitted by: Katie Perry

The aging process commences immediately after birth. As time marches on, the changes in ones appearance gradually become more and more apparent. While some individuals have good genes and age gracefully, others can appear much older than their years due to various factors, including heredity, smoking, sun exposure, and a generally unhealthy lifestyle.

Many people begin to notice the first signs of aging, such as fine lines, thinning lips, and an overall loss of facial fullness, around the age of 40. The upper eyelids can also start to sag, and bags (herniated fat pads) might appear under the eyes. Oftentimes, these early signs of aging can be treated sufficiently with minimally invasive injectables, such as Botox and Dysport, which can be effective in relaxing the facial muscles that create wrinkles as they contract. Fat fillers can be utilized to fill in fine lines and improve facial contours, while dermal fillers like Restylane can be used to fill in deeper creases, such as the laugh lines that can develop on either side of the nose and mouth. At this point, injectables and/or fillers might be all the treatment a patient wants or requires. These types of minimally invasive treatments can also postpone the need for a surgical facelift procedure. On the other hand, people who have developed more pronounced signs of aging might contemplate a surgical approach, such as a facelift, to help turn back the aging clock.

Can a patients age preclude cosmetic surgery?

Certain older individuals, especially those who are beyond retirement age, might think that plastic surgery is not a viable or worthwhile option for them. Some might feel that they no longer have to try to impress anyone, while others think that they are simply too old for plastic surgery. However, its important to keep in mind that many cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts and other facial rejuvenation techniques, can sometimes erase years from a persons appearance. As such, these procedures by their nature are not intended to be performed on young people.

An advanced chronological age, in and of itself, does not contraindicate certain types of cosmetic surgery. Rather, an individuals physiological age including his or her overall health and fitness level is a much more important factor than chronological age in determining candidacy for any type of surgery, including plastic surgery.

Who is a good candidate for cosmetic surgery?

Prospective patients of all ages not just seniors must meet certain baseline criteria to ensure that they are good candidates for plastic surgery. Those criteria include:

Good overall mental and physical health with no uncontrolled chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes

A stable, healthy body weight

No cigarette smoking or other tobacco use

Sufficient skin elasticity

Realistic expectations

Appropriate motivations

A full understanding of the procedure and its associated risks, potential complications, and recovery time

With regard to motivations, the distinction between an emotionally healthy reason and an emotionally unhealthy reason for desiring cosmetic surgery can be subtle. For instance, consider the difference between a prospective patient who says, I want to look younger, with one who says, I want to look better for my age. The latter is more likely to be satisfied with the outcome of a cosmetic procedure, and thus is a better candidate.

In sum, if an individual is in good health and has reasonable expectations along with a true desire to enhance his or her appearance, he or she is not too old for plastic surgery. During a personal consultation, a trusted cosmetic surgeon can review these factors and others to help a prospective patient make an informed decision on the most appropriate course of action for his or her personal circumstances and objectives.

Consult with a Board Certified Surgeon

Any individual who is interested in plastic surgery is encouraged to consult with an experienced cosmetic surgeon who is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board certification for cosmetic surgeons that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Board Certification in plastic surgery requires graduation from an accredited medical school, along with highly rigorous training. This training includes completion of a surgical residency program specifically devoted to plastic surgery, as well as successful completion of comprehensive written and oral exams.

Lycos Europe ends its anti-spam campaign

Tuesday, December 7, 2004

EUROPE — Lycos Europe has ended its anti-spam operation: “Make Love Not Spam.” A company spokesperson said the objective of the time-limited campaign was to raise people’s awareness. The reasons why it ended the campaign was variously reported and speculated in media. The operation, while fairly popular, suffered unexpected troubles and drew criticism from security experts and others from the start.

The company started distributing a screensaver on November 29, 2004 on makelovenotspam.com. Once installed, the computer would send HTTP requests to spammers’ servers when not in use. The intent was to raise the running costs of those servers. Lycos coordinated these requests by choosing targets from lists generated by organizations such as Spamcop.com. The servers were monitored so as to keep them under heavy load, but alive.

Security experts roundly criticized the program. Steve Linford, director of a non-profit anti-spam organization SpamHaus, and Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant of Sophos, pointed out that lowering moral standards to fight spammers was not a good idea. The legality of attacking the servers was also debated since it resembles “Distributed Denial of Service” attacks (DDoS), except that Lycos did not completely shut down the target servers.

Other troubles arose. The day after the campaign was launched, there was an alleged takeover of the web site’s top page by a cracker. The page was replaced with a warning against the use of the screensaver, according to a screenshot sent via email to the Finnish security firm F-Secure. A Lycos spokesperson said that the screenshot was a hoax: there was no trace of intrusion in the server log and the site was simply unavailable due to a high demand.

Some Internet service providers blocked either the traffic to Lycos-Europe, or the requests generated by the screensaver.

Next, one of the targeted sites redirected all traffic to the Lycos’ server, making Lycos itself a target. The company had maintained that its server was immune from the attack. Lycos stopped distributing the program on December 3, 2004 and asked clients to “stay tuned.” The company later ended the program.

On December 6, F-Secure reported a virus email disguised as the anti-spam screensaver. When its attachment (a zip file) is opened, it self-extracts and installs a “Trojan horse” –harmful program disguised as legitimate software. The Trojan horse was set up to monitor keystrokes in order to steal passwords, bank account numbers and other important information.

Lycos’ software had been downloaded more than 100,000 times by the end of the campaign.

Saskatchewan places moratorium on boar farming, says escaped boars should be killed

Saturday, March 14, 2009

At the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) conference, a resolution was passed that encourages the Government of Saskatchewan, Canada to place a moratorium on specialty livestock farms raising wild boar. All wild boars that have escaped to roam wild should be killed, according to the resolution.

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud endorses a ban on wild boar farming. The wild boar population is expanding exponentially. There are over 2,000 feral Sus scrofa swine roaming the prairies. Two litters of approximately 12 piglets are sired by each wild boar sow every year. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) likewise passed a similar resolution at their 79th annual convention to urge the Saskatchewan Government to declare the wild boar as a nuisance species which can be killed on sight.

3% of farmed “wild” boars escape. Cells of wild boars are ravenous creatures killing and eating everything in their path. Horses, cows, and other livestock run from wild boars, breaking through fences in the process.

Ostriches, emus, llamas, alpacas, reindeer, wild boar, and fallow deer were amongst the animals introduced to farms in Saskatchewan during the agricultural diversification program in the late 1970s. Production of wild boars was promoted throughout the 1980s.

According to the Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food 2001 statistics, there were 150 wild boar producers raising approximately 15,000 and 20,000 head. Of these there were about 2,700 sows. On the 2006 Census of Agriculture, 401 farms reported 4,926 boars.

The boar’s red meat is an export commodity to Europe and Asia. The live breeding stock are also sold to trophy hunt ranches. Full blooded wild boar and hybrid crosses are raised.

Difficult To Understand But Perfect For Use

Then I read it twice and thrice then only I came to know about its meaning. Here is the simplest form for you all who are interested to know about the multiple of this single technical device. This cylinder is not normal cylinder that we use in our kitchen. These hydraulic cylinders are mechanical devices that are used for poignant or for monitoring a system. A hydraulic cylinder gives such forceful stroke with unidirectional strike. It is much powerful cylinder that is not filled with gas but is filled with fluid and is controlled with hydraulic motor. Thus, it is also known as linear hydraulic motor. With the help of Hydraulic fluid this hydraulic cylinder is able to produce under pressure linear motion along with force. These Hydraulic Cylinders are also known as hydraulic Jacks, hydraulic Rams, linear hydraulic actuators and also are famous as hydraulic actuators. In a Hydraulic cylinder, with the help of hydraulic pump energy is produced and when energy is produced these hydraulic cylinders transfigure this energy into a mechanical output to execute the chore. Thus, these cylinders perform are well-known as strongest and inseparable part. i.e muscles for machinery.Fundamentally, these Hydraulic Cylinders are used by big factories and industries whereby big machines bear the load of heavy products because to carry this operation huge power source is needed. Not only in big industries and large scale of factories carry out this process but these cylinders are also brought in every type of heavy gear and heavy automobiles such as its used in the excavators, bull dozers, forklifts and even in elevators its brought in used. You might be surprised to know that these heavy power cylinders used mostly in big industries and big factories can also be brought in our normal day to day life, i.e household chores and domestic applications. Want to know how? Then here it goes for all men and women who spend most of their time in home. It is much safe as other machines and even it carry out assigned task much quicker along with great ease and safety. These Hydraulic Cylinders comes in varying shapes and sizes but performs the task equal to other types of cylindrical machines. Some of these are thin in shape; some are thick and are useful for different types of works. Especially these Hydraulic Cylinders are used by engineers mostly. Go Budding engineers go and try this new machine out for your new work.

Guidant Corporation recently announced another safety warning on several models of its implantable defibrillators, cautioning users for the second time in a week about the devices. No patients are known to have been injured by the devices at this time. This brings the total number of defibrillator models recalled to twelve.

According to the Associated Press article, the five defibrillator models recalled “have a magnetic switch that can become stuck in a closed position, preventing the device from treating irregular heart rhythms. The faulty switch also can limit a defibrillator’s battery life.”

After the announcement Friday, Guidant’s stock dropped 6.9 percent, or $4.70, to $63.90.
