UK drivers urged not to panic buy during delivery strikes

Friday, June 13, 2008

British drivers have been urged not to panic buy fuel because of the 4-day walkout by delivery drivers working for companies delivering to Shell petrol stations. The 600 workers have walked out over pay disagreements, wanting an increase to their current pay of £36,500, however their union Unite turned down a last-minute offer of £41,500.

Hoyer UK, which employs tanker drivers for Shell, said, “We extended our offer to the very limits that our business could sustain.” However Unite said in a press release that, “this dispute could have been resolved if Shell had advanced a fraction of the billions of pounds in profit they make every month”, continuing to say, “one of the world’s richest companies is prepared to play Pontius Pilate and see the British public inconvenienced rather than settle this dispute for a sum smaller than the chairman’s pay increase last year”

Shell admitted that the walkout could leave some of its 1,000 forecourts without fuel, but the UK Petrol Industry Association, which represent oil refiners, said that forecourts would have around 4 days of supply, maintaining usual stocking levels. Shell also commented that the strike impact would be “significant”, as the company runs around 1 in 10 of all petrol stations in the UK.

British Business Secretary, John Hutton, said that “the strike, which will have a disproportionate effect on people in Britain, cannot be justified,” and urged both sides to resume negotiations in order to settle the dispute. “We have been working closely with industry to put in place detailed contingency plans to reduce as far as possible the disruption for the driving public,” he added. Unite’s press release also confirms that “provision has been made for fire, police and the emergency services.”

Tanker drivers on strike have set up picket lines at many of Shell’s UK refineries, including those in Stanlow, Avonmouth, Plymouth, Pembroke, Cardiff, Kingsbury, Basildon, Grangemouth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Jarrow and Luton Airport.

The Sport Of Gymnastics

By James Brown

Gymnastics is a sport that is open to men and women around the world and one that is enjoyed immensely by children because it is something that is thrilling and new. The gymnastics programs for children are designed to prepare them for a better life and many parents enroll their children in gymnastics for the fitness opportunities it offers. There are very few programs that provide children with a fun way to develop all of their muscles and build their confidence too.

Gymnastics allows athletes to express their artistic abilities and their rhythmic talents while performing exercises that are viewed by all as entertaining. Children love to be the center of attention and gymnastics gives them the opportunity to show off and excel in a sport that is fun and one that allows them to do daring things that some of their friends will never get the chance to do. This type of opportunity comes around once in a lifetime, and those that take advantage of it become well-rounded individuals that can take all the stressors in life in stride.

Gymnastics incorporates the use of various pieces of equipment to exude various forms of expression. The gymnast will be required to train on mats while learning, and will be guided in their training programs by coaches every step of the way. They will be tested on their abilities before they are asked to perform complex maneuvers on any of the pieces of equipment.

A gymnast will learn to train their muscles to support their weight while performing on various types of apparatus such as the balance beam, parallel bars, and uneven bars, rings, vault and floor exercises. The gymnast will follow an aggressive training program and develop a surmountable level of energy that will be used to perform various tumbling exercises. Gymnastics allows people to enjoy life because they are in the best physical condition they can be.

Other equipment is used to entertain gymnasts while they are in training. The trampoline serves as a launching point for gymnasts who are learning flips that they will use during their floor exercises programs. For safety reasons, all students are provided with safety harnesses that can be fastened at the waist while they are in training. These devices provide the gymnast with additional support and varying degrees of mobility. Some gymnasts wear them all the time and others choose to wear them when they are unsure of their abilities.

There are many sports that have adapted gymnastics into their training programs. Football players have benefited from gymnastics because it provides them with the dexterity to move more quickly after the ball is snapped. Cheerleading programs have benefited greatly from the tumbling exercises that are part of every gymnastics-training program.

Some cheerleaders would not have been selected for cheerleading if they had not enrolled in a gymnastics program to learn how to perform the cartwheels and handstands that are part of cheerleading. Gymnastics training has a way of adding more zip and zing to people’s personalities and will certainly leave all athletes with more energy to excel in their chosen sport.

Chilean army recruits missing

Friday, May 20, 2005

The Chilean Army acknowledges 65 recruits are missing in the Andes from a training exercise that was hit by severe snow storm. Colonel Carlos Mezano also reports 5 bodies have been recovered so far, apparently all had died from hypothermia.

433 Soldiers of the Regiment “Los Ángeles” went missing Thursday on the Los Barros range in southern central Chile, close to Argentine border, approximately 600 km southeast of the capital of Santiago. 316 recruits completed the exercise and are reported to be safe. 47 are reported safe, though incommunicado, in a high mountain refuge. The remaining 65 are still missing.

General Juan Emilio Cheyre, Chief Commander of the Army declared, “A unit of this type, surprised by a tsunami of snow, is trained to stop, so it is possible that they are all camping […] I do not want to raise false hopes. This is a unexpected situation, but to me a unit offers more hope than scattered soldiers.”

Rescue efforts have encountered trouble due to severe bad weather. A ‘no fly zone’ has been established in the Andes region. The Army and the media are avoiding, for now, speculation over the number of possibly dead soldiers, but the general mood of the families is pessimistic and allegations of neglect by Army officials have started to arise.

Most of the soldiers are men from the local area, from 18 to 19 years old.

Wikinews interviews India’s first female Paralympic medalist Deepa Malik

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Wikinews on Sunday interviewed Deepa Malik, India’s first female Paralympic medalist, who won the silver medal in the Women’s Shot Put F53 event finals, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Malik lost the gold medal to Bahrain’s Fatema Nedham, who had the best throw 4.76 metres, setting a new regional record in paralympic women’s shot put.

Arriving in Rio, Malik had initial trouble due to the airline losing her luggage; it didn’t all arrive until three days later: clothes, opening ceremony outfit and equipment including competition belts.

In early August there was a possibly that Malik might lose her spot on the Indian team going to Rio, with fellow female para athlete Karam Jyoti challenging Malik’s selection and the Sport’s Authority of Indian’s selection process at the High Court of Delhi. The high court ruled against the plaintiff.

Both of these events occurred against the wider backdrop of the Paralympic Committee of India being suspended by the International Paralympic Committee. The Sports Authority of India took final authority over the Paralympic Committee of India for sending a team to Rio, with agreement from the International Paralympic Committee; this arrangement allowed India to compete under their own flag at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

((Wikinews)) Congratulations on your result.

Deepa Malik: Thank you so much.

((WN)) Even though you are currently waiting in terms of the end result of the protest.

DM: Absolutely, but I’m happy with my performance, I’m happy that I could improve and I could prove myself, there were a lot of questions back home on my selection and on my hard work. My single-minded focus that I had put into this journey of being a Paralympian. Well, I am just so anxious about the results.

((WN)) So how much did the court case and KLM losing your luggage impact on your preparations and your result today?

DM: Yes, but I’m happy that my husband was my coach here, and, so, I had huge moral support in terms of keeping my mind and everything in peace. Most of the equipment was available in the gym, we had to alter the training a bit like the throw days couldn’t happen, so we instead exercised. No, I think that is what sports teaches you, you can’t live on excuses, I never lived on excuses.

((WN)) You work around things.

DM: Yes, that’s what we do, that’s what a sportsman is suppose to do, rise again, and then fall and rise, and run, and I did exactly that.

((WN)) What message should other Indian women take away from your participation and result in Rio?

DM: This is going to be the first female medal that India would have ever won in Paralympics and as it is I’m working aggressively towards transforming this entire concept of empowerment for the women, especially the women in disabilities in my country. So I’m really happy that this medal give my voice more value, more strength, and I’ll be able to impact even more, though on the ninth of September the Prime Minister’s jury has awarded me with the award of Women Transforming India, I’m so happy that within three days of getting that award, I have added another feather to it and proved that yes this journey of ability beyond disability. And not just disability, this is a universal message that if women put their minds to their dreams they can balance it; age, gender, disability, is all a state of mind. If you put your passion and hard work, you can get it, and in the Indian scenario were they say infrastructure is a challenge, women participation that are taboo, religiously and psychologically, disabilities taken as a curse, dependability[?] increases because of lack of infrastructure, well, time to get rid of the excuses. We have to start erasing the excuses and believe your own self and that’s the message I’m carrying with all the activities that I do whether it is car rallying, motorbiking or swimming across a river, every record or every unique activity that I’ve undertaken and just below paralysis has been aimed at changing the stereotypical image of a women and also a women in disability. ?

((WN)) Will you and your daughter both be trying to represent India at the 2020 Games in Tokyo?

DM: I’m very sure about myself, but my daughter, though, she’s a Paralympian, yes, which again was considered a huge taboo in my society that oh my god both the mother and the daughter both have a physical disability, what is going to happen to these two, but we did good and she is working as a youth council representative in the Commonwealth countries, for the Paralympics specially, and her work though her foundation called Wheeling Happiness has earned her the young leader award from the Queen of England, so I guess her focus is now shifting to more on community service and empowering others and not just herself. And she is leaving on first of October to Loughborough to do her PhD doctorate programme in disability sports psychology, I’m very sure Loughborough is going to give her a huge amount of sports [inaudible] but how much time she going to decide to devote to sports and studies is her decision entirely. That’s her dream, her journey.

((WN)) How helpful was the Sports Authority of India in preparing and supporting your Rio ambitions??

DM: I think 100 per cent, because the biggest challenge we have back home is a customised training, or the infrastructure for that matter, so we were given the ability and the funds to train the way we wanted to train, and the funds were huge which were given to us, out accommodation, food, diet, physical therapist, psychologist, trainer, gym, everything was paid for, and customised, you want it and they give it. So I guess this was easy financially this time, because every expenses was taken care of, my husband could also take a sabbatical from his job and join my journey, and having him twenty-four seven and coaching me because he himself is an athlete, and have the best diet and counselling. I think it’s worked wonders, so I give shout out and a huge applaud.

((WN)) How important was it for you to have a carer in Rio?

DM: Yes, again we really have to appreciate the sports authority of India and also Paralympic Committee of India, which is going to start to function post-Rio in India. They were very very quick, they were very very adamant in giving the wheelchair people escorts. And I need help twenty four seven, I’m just below paralysed so it was really huge, emotionally, mentally, psychically training-wise, every way I think the situation was perfect.

((WN)) Thank you for your time.

DM: Thank you.

Czech Republic Minister of Transport banned from driving

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Vít Bárta, the Minister of Transport for the Czech Republic, has been banned from driving. Bárta has been banned for six months after being caught driving with a fake licence plate.

The minister was driving with a sticker with his registration number written on it glued to the hood of his car. He was caught in July, while driving his Maserati home from his own wedding. He claimed to have lost the original licence plate while driving along a dirt road. It has been reported that Bárta does not plan to appeal the ban.

As well as his six-month driving ban, Bárta has also been fined 5,000 koruna. The charges were announced by Karel Hanzelka, a spokesman for the Transport Ministry.

Bárta spoke to reporters about his ban. He joked around saying that he wouldn’t really miss his licence and that his “wife will drive him around”. He also said that he accepted his punishment.

Case Studies Of Using Frequency Specific Microcurrent}

Case Studies of Using Frequency Specific Microcurrent

by

Peter Lawless

New Injury Case Report

The patient was a 19 year old male driver of a vehicle rear-ended by another vehicle travelling approximately 60 miles an hour. The injuries expected from this magnitude of collision would have been significant and the patient would have been symptomatic for approximately three to four months. He was treated with Frequency Specific Microcurrent within five hours of the accident using the frequencies for new injuries. The next day he was almost pain free with full range of motion. A second treatment the next day reduced the pain to 0-1/10 on a visual analogue scale. On the fourth post accident day, when the pain would have been at its worst had he not been treated with FSM, he was pain free.

This information can be verified by Dr. Michael Hatrak, the patient’s father. (001 – 770 940-9200)

The Four Hour Window

In over 100 cases, collected by the 300 FSM practitioners in the US and the 100 in Australia, new injuries produced by trauma, accidents, falls, or surgery respond dramatically to the effects of FSM. If FSM can be applied in the first four hours after the injury it is almost as if the inflammatory process never sets up. The current increases energy production in the cells and restores the normal bioelectric activity of the tissue. The frequencies that produce the most profound effect are the ones thought to reduce bleeding from torn or injured tissues and reduce inflammation. One hour of treatment, using these and many other frequencies, seems to be adequate to eliminate or greatly reduce the pain and greatly reduce the amount of time needed for healing. In most cases the patient is pain free within two to three days as long as there is no fracture. Fractures improve and heal at a rapid rate if treated within this four hour window. Soft tissue injuries are pain free in one to two days. The new injury protocols include frequencies thought and observed to improve concussion and cognitive function. At this time, only case reports document these effects but animal and functional MRI studies are planned.

Is there any one FSM does not work on?

Patients who are dehydrated cannot benefit from FSM. It has been observed that patients who are dehydrated athletes with large muscle mass and inadequate water in take and patients over 70 who are chronically dehydrated have the most problems. Every patient is advised to drink at least one quart of water in the one hour preceding treatment. Patients who are chronically dehydrated may need more.

No technique is 100% effective and FSM is no exception. The effectiveness of FSM depends almost entirely on an accurate diagnosis. Shoulder pain can come from muscles, tendons, bursa, discs, nerves or joints. FSM will treat all of these pain generators effectively. But, if you are treating for muscle and the shoulder pain is from nerves or the bursa you may change the muscle but you won’t change the patient’s pain since it is not coming from the muscle.

Risks and Side Effects

FSM is delivered by battery operated device and provides subsensory current. It cannot be used through a pregnant uterus or in patients who have pacemakers. Patients must be well hydrated for optimal current flow and optimal results. The only common side effect occurs following treatment for chronic muscle pain when some patients experience what appears to be a detoxification reaction approximately 90 minutes after treatment. This reaction can be prevented by consumption of adequate water and an anti-oxidant supplement. There are no other known side effects or risks.

FSM for Contact Sports

The benefits of FSM for the players of contact sports are obvious. In the U.S. the physicians who treat professional athletes have requested a special seminar, a special program for trainers, and an automated treatment unit designed specifically for athletes.

Frequency Specific Microcurrent and the National Football League

Frequency Specific Microcurrent was discovered by the American NFL in 2003. Bill Romanowski brought FSM to the Oakland Raiders with his chiropractor. Tony Parrish and Terrell Owens were treated along with eight linemen from the San Francisco 49ers in August 2003 by Dr. McMakin. Now, NFL teams and athletes from other sports are using FSM in record numbers. The results are impressive and consistent. Chronic injuries clear up in record time. FSM can remodel scar tissue in one sixty minute session that would take months to do manually.

New injuries heal in record time. In animal studies, FSM increases the rate of ATP production by 500% and has been shown to reduce inflammation by 62% in four minutes. Imagine these benefits applied to new injuries and you can see why Jeff Spencer takes his FSM training and his FSM units with him when he treats the US Postal team on the Tour de France. When Terrell Owens was injured in December 2004 and wanted to be able to play in the Super Bowl 6 weeks later, FSM was there when he got out of surgery and was a part of the team who made his amazing recovery and spectacular performance possible in Super Bowl 2005.

Everyone said the injury needed 13 to 18 weeks to heal and remodel. FSM, Terrell and the treatment team did it in 6 weeks.

The National Qualification in Frequency Specific Microcurrent includes frequencies and protocols that are useful in all types of conditions including those particular to athletes.

What is the difference between the microcurrent and a laser?

Microcurrent provides electrons and in published studies increases ATP production in cells. Lasers provide photons. I am not aware of any research suggesting that laser treatment increases ATP production. Lasers oscillate at set frequencies and provide beneficial results. They are doing it by some other method than frequency specific resonance and ATP enhancement.

What is the difference between microcurrent and TENS?

Microcurrent is approved in the category of TENS devices determined by the U.S. FDA. TENS devices deliver milliamp current and block pain messages that are tying to get up the spine to the brain. Microcurrent delivers microamperage current which has been shown in published studies to increase ATP production in tissues.

What is the difference between microcurrent and ultra sound?

Ultra sound creates ultrasonic vibrations and creates heat by vibrating the water molecules in the tissue. It does not provide current nor does it change ATP status. It provides beneficial results it is just completely different than microcurrent.

British fashion designer Alexander McQueen found dead at age 40

Friday, February 12, 2010

British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has died at the age of 40. He was found dead inside his residence in London, England yesterday.

The Metropolitan Police said they are are not treating the death as suspicious. A spokesperson for the police force said, “[w]e were called by London Ambulance Service at about 10.20am this morning to reports of a man found dead at an address in Green Street, W1. He is believed to be 40 years old and from London. Next of kin have been informed, however we await formal identification before releasing the name of the deceased.” According to reports, McQueen committed suicide by hanging, however this has not been confirmed.

Between the years of 1996 and 2003, McQueen received Fashion Designer of the Year four times. He was also given a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003. The fashion designer had a new selection of clothing, entitled “McQ”, that was expected to be shown on Thursday; the show has now been cancelled. Alexander’s mother Joyce died earlier this month. In response to this, McQueen placed a message on his Twitter page which said “RIP mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.” Isabella Blow, who assisted in making McQueen famous, killed herself in 2007.

Yesterday, a statement was released from McQueen’s company headquarters stating “On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family. Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”

Six dead in arson attack in Bridgetown, Barbados

Monday, September 6, 2010

Six people have died after a clothing store was set on fire during an armed robbery in Bridgetown, Barbados. Two men entered Campus Trendz Clothing Store wielding machetes and demanded money. The pair then set a fire and fled the scene.

Three employees and three customers headed to the back of the store to try and escape the blaze but failed to exit the store. All of the victims were female and one is reported to have been a toddler.

A witness described the events saying that he was stood on the pavement outside of the store when he saw a man run across the pavement.

The witness said, “Then a second fellah with something like a scarf over his face ran behind him and then I heard this big explosion. Within minutes I saw this big gush of smoke and the whole of the store was on fire. I have never seen anything like that.”

Former Prime Minister of Barbados Owen Arthur has called for “stiff penalties” for those responsible for the attack. He said “When somebody could throw a cocktail in a building where other Barbadians are, we have to call it what it is, modern terrorism and they must face the full measure and full weight [of the law].” He has also called for a national day of mourning for the victims.
