Canadian former deputy PM Herb Gray dies at age 82

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Herb Gray, a Canadian former deputy Prime Minister whose federal political career stretched 39 years, died yesterday. He was 82.

The lawyer from Windsor was undefeated through thirteen consecutive elections, from 1962 to his last in 2000. The Liberal was the third longest serving Parliamentarian of the nation. Nicknamed Gray Herb for his seriousness and The Gray Fog for his ability to deflect questions, Herb was the first Jewish minister in Canada.

Deputy PM Sheila Copps’s 1997 resignation saw Gray promoted to fill the role. Prior to that he served as interim Liberal leader in 1990.

Despite his professional seriousness he had a love of political satire, collecting editorial cartoons and listening to radio shows such as Royal Canadian Air Farce and Double Exposure. Outside of politics he enjoyed rock music and played classical piano.

Gray survived throat cancer treated with radiation in the 1990s and operations for prostate and heart conditions in 1999 and 2001 respectively.

James Moore, Conservative current Minister for Industry, tweeted about the “marvel” of Gray “swatting away our questions […] when we were in opposition.” Current Liberal head Justin Trudeau said Gray was a “great statesman” who “left behind an immense legacy unmatched by most in Canadian history”.

Copps said he was “an incredible Canadian and a brilliant parliamentarian” and ex-leader of the Liberals Bob Rae said he “served Canada with such distinction and care”. Current Prime Minister Stephen Harper called Gray “an honourable parliamentarian who served his country well”.

Gray is survived by wife Sharon Sholzberg, who once said she not once witnessed her partner heading “out for a drink with the boys”, and their two children and eight grandchildren.

Apple to hold media event on September 1, may update iPods and Apple TV

Friday, August 27, 2010

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.

Visalus Sciences Takes On Nutrition And Wellness Nutrition Industry To Top 1 Trillion By 2011 Top Ten Reasons To Take A Look

By Alecia Barnes

The Health and Wellness industry is expected to be a trillion dollar industry by the year 2010, as baby boomers and fitness enthusiasts alike continue to invest in products and services that help them to maintain their health and youthful vitality.

According to Paul Zane Pilzer , a world renowned economist, this $200 billion industry is beginning to take off, and is expected to create an additional 1 trillion dollars in demand for products and services related to making us look and feel good, as well as slow the effects of aging, and in some cases prevent diseases altogether.

Who wants to look good, and feel good?

The baby boomer generation continues to be a buzz word in several industries, and the focus of many industries attention due to the purchasing power these baby boomers represent. The sheer purchasing power of the dynamic demographic is causing many industries to invest in the creation of products and services that specifically cater to this niche.

In short, this demographic has money, and theyre ready to spend it on products designed to maintain and increase their quality of life and their health through their retirements.

The clich saying 60 is the new 40 is ringing truer as many turn to the health and wellness industry to slow and even reverse the signs of aging, and new and all natural health products are being designed with the baby boomer purchasing power in mind.

What are the concerns of baby boomers as they creep closer and closer to the golden years of retirement? Retirement and financial security concerns, health, looking and feeling younger, and continuing education are just the tip of the iceberg.

Due to a growing awareness of how important proactive health management is, the majority of over $200 billion in sales from the health and wellness industry is generated through vitamin sales and health club memberships.

What does this growing trend represent to the average person, and how does it relate to the current state of the economy.

Simple.

The growth of the health and wellness industry represents an income stream for those who see an opportunity, and are wise enough to leverage this knowledge into an income for themselves.

Network Marketing and the Health and Wellness industry

The following trends are things that you should look for when looking for the right health and wellness opportunity in order to profit tremendously for this lucrative industry.

1. Timing is everything. It may be tempting to join well established companies, however if they are really large organizations, the ability to build true, life changing wealth and a healthy, large organization may be limited. Opportunities in the pre-launch phase, as well as ground floor opportunities where you can get in at the start are a better alternative.

2. The company should offer consumable products that are in high demand, and of high quality. Your customers can try these products and it will create return business through re-orders.

3. Look for opportunities that offer a compensation plan that rewards the many, rather than the few. A residual income component is a huge bonus and is income that you will receive long after you have done the hard work, and will pay you as your organization continues to grow.

4. Find a company on the verge of momentum, or in the midst of hitting momentum is a good opportunity to get involved with. Simply put, the buzz is becoming a roar about the opportunity, pay plan and products.

5. It is more about the team that you join, rather than the opportunity that you join. What is the track record of the person presenting the opportunity? How large is their organization? What is their retention rate? How do they market? You must interview many people, and be picky about who you decide to join.

6. Attend the training and opportunity calls prior to joining, and look for companies that are using modern technology. Look for systems that are simple to duplicate, that have simple systems to follow and that the systems have proven to work well for others. If the majority in the company is having success by using the systems in place, your future down-line will be able to duplicate your efforts.

7. Be willing to be trainable, find a mentor, and do what your mentor tells you to do.

8. Make realistic goals and post those goals where you can see them on a daily basis. Be accountable to your goals, and do not allow yourself to give yourself excuses.

9. Due your due diligence, and trust your gut. If something about the company does not feel right, get on the internet, do your research and check facts. Do not be afraid to call the home office and ask a lot of questions.

10. Invest in yourself, and feed your mind. I highly recommend that you purchase the book Your first year in Network Marketing by Mark Yarnell.

UBS sees net income jump 15 percent

Tuesday, May 3, 2005

Swiss banking giant UBS today reported better than expected first-quarter results – but warned investors that full year results could be hit by weaker investment banking revenues.

First-quarter net profit stood at 2.625bn Swiss francs (US$2.19bn; €1.7bn) up 15% from last year’s 2.28bn Swiss francs. Assets under management grew to 2.36 trillion Swiss francs (US$1.97 trillion; €1.53 trillion); an increase of 21.2bn Swiss francs on last year.

Despite the solid performance, CFO Clive Standish told the media “Clearly we have seen a slowing of the markets over the quarter, particularly in March… There is a perceptible slowdown in markets as we speak.” Reacting to the pessimism, UBS shares dropped 1.5%.

Australian swimmer Steph Rice announces retirement

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

One of Australia’s most famous swimming Olympians, Stephanie Rice, 25, announced her retirement earlier today.

The swimmer addressed the Australian public in a video. Here she thanked everyone that has supported her and reflected back on her Olympic career, “It’s sad, I definitely feel like I’m losing a part of myself, but I’m really excited about what’s about to come.”

After several shoulder operations in the lead up to the 2012 London Olympics, Rice fell short of her own expectations. Disappointed with her performance, she says she wanted to give herself a year or two break before making any decisions about the future. “I felt a lot of pressure to live up to everyone’s expectations and fulfil their answers, but I knew I had to take the time for myself to get to the point where I knew 100 percent what I wanted to do,” she says.

Long-time swimming coach Michael Bohl confirmed Rice’s doubts after the London Olympics in a telephone interview with The Associated Press today. “She couldn’t get the best out of herself there,” he says “but with what she endured, she didn’t want to retire with question marks. She wanted a year or two to think about it.”

While Rice has left her career plans unanswered, she hopes to use her popularity with the Australian public as a platform to something else. “It’s safe to say that’s the new goal and new passion for me… to prove myself out of the water.”

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

Immigration Detainees on Hunger Strike in Oxford UK

Thursday, June 15, 2006

One hundred and twenty detainees at an immigration removal centre in Oxford, UK, are on hunger strike. The protest started when some detainees refused breakfast on Wednesday 14th June 2006. A letter from the hunger strikers explaining why they are seeking to draw attention to their plight in this way has been reproduced in full below.

Those detained at the centre are mostly men who have sought asylum in the UK and whose asylum applications have been rejected. These people are then held without knowing how long they will be detained for – some end up being held for many years while awaiting deportation.

The removal centre, known as Campsfield, or Campsfield House is approximately 5 miles north of Oxford and has been in operation since 1993. It was managed on behalf of the UK Government by Global Solutions Limited, until may 2006 when it was taken on by GEO UK, the centre has a capacity of 198. Only males are detained at Campsfield.

According to the campaign group Barbed Wire Britain Over 2,600 individuals, mostly asylum seekers, are detained indefinitely in the UK without trial and with no automatic right to bail.

There have been reports in the UK press of the state taking people to detention centres without notice, in the early hours of the morning using excessively heavy handed tactics, taking children out of schools and separating families.

Many UK people and politicians express their disgust at the way detainees are treated, yet it continues. Perhaps this action by the detainees themselves will further highlight their plight and result in more UK electors writing to their MPs and demanding improvements to the way in which rejected asylum seekers are treated.

“We are detainees at Campsfield removal centre in Oxford. Most of us have been here for a long while now. There are people who have been detained for up to two years and down to three months. We are cramped in here like animals. We are treated like animals and moved around different detention centres like animals. The immigration service have taken husbands from their families and taken people who ran away from persecution in their various countries, and dumped everyone in here.

Once you are put in here the immigration service forget you. There are detainees who have applied to go back to their own countries that are still being held here for months without any news about their cases, just so that the private security companies get more money.

Detainees are asked to seek asylum and then refused. The immigration service also ask detainees to apply for bail. When you get a bail hearing date all of a sudden they serve you with removal papers that are not valid. There are many of these situations. In most cases the immigration service don’t take you to your court hearings. And then they tell the judges you refused to turn up, just so the hearing goes ahead in your absence. Many detainees have been served with removal papers and travel documents but nothing happens on the removal day.

Campsfield has become a slave house. We detainees are treated like slaves, to do odd jobs for officers. Detainees are handcuffed to see doctors or dentists in hospitals or clinic appointments. We have some racist security officers who make racist comments to detainees and go out of their way to make you feel like committing suicide. Detainees have to be at the point of death before they get to see the doctors.

The food is not worth eating. Even dogs would refuse to eat what we eat. But we don’t have a choice; every single day we eat the same food (the food we eat is rice, chicken, sandwiches, and left-over eggs)”.

Low Voc Polyurethane Deck Coating}

Low-VOC Polyurethane Deck Coating

by

Steve A. Parker

Low-VOC polyurethane-based formulations are some of the most important products to have come out of manufacturers’ labs to satisfy the requirements for deck coatings of commercial and industrial facilities. These new line of deck coatings are very flexible in any type of weather conditions and boast of more functional and decorative features that help repair, protect and enhance all types of decks.

Polyurethane deck coatings maintain deck quality as liquid-applied single-components coatings. These polyurethane deck coatings come in concrete, gray, or tan colors and are moisture-cured and slip-resistant, characteristics that are very suitable for waterproofing trafficked or pedestrian areas like parking decks and roof decks.

Low-VOC deck coatings are also suitable for exterior and interior applications and retain their elastomeric properties in extreme temperatures such as freezing weather or very hot climates.

Applying Low-VOC Polyurethane Deck Coating

Low-VOC polyurethane deck coatings can be applied in any types of decks. For lightly-trafficked surfaces such as patios, roof decks and sun decks, low-VOC deck coatings can be applied to a primed concrete surface using one liter of paint to around 1.57 square meter of deck area. This will result to .63 centimeters of thickened film. To avoid pinholes, extra care should be taken when applying the deck coatings, applying the formulation as uniformly as possible. If pinholes are unavoidable, immediate repair should be done on the surface.

A low-VOC glaze is then roller-applied, although brush or spray painting can also be used to achieve a 0.4 millimeter film thickness. A gallon of sand is immediately broadcasted uniformly into the wet surface, with backrolling done on the surface to evenly distribute the deck coatings. Generally, it takes only an overnight curing process before the deck surface can be used for pedestrian traffic once again.

In the case of medium- to heavily-trafficked deck areas, the initial coating application of low-VOC deck coatings is allowed to cure overnight. Another layer of deck coatings is applied the following day and sand is broadcasted to the surface. The coating and sanding process is repeated in as many days as recommended by manufacturers, until a final top coat is applied and allowed to cure for 3 days to complete the deck coatings system.

Low-VOC Polyurethane Deck Coating Materials

For a complete and correct application of the deck coatings system, there are several materials used in the process. The main material is the low-VOC polyurethane coating whose main use is to waterproof the deck membrane with its elastomeric properties, usually a one-part and self-leveling formulation that also interacts with the sand aggregate. Another material is the two-component and solvent-based epoxy primer that prepares concrete and metal deck surfaces prior to coating application.

A single-component and non-staining polyurethane sealant is another material used in deck coatings systems. When cured at the right temperature, it becomes rubber-like, which is flexible and tear-resistant. To increase slip- and wear-resistance, sand aggregates are used at every coating layer. To complete the deck coatings system, a polyurethane top coat is needed to protect the deck coatings from ultra-violet exposure.
