CN Health & Safety Plan planned to be cancelled

Monday, August 29, 2005

On July 18, 2005 CN Rail notified the CAW that they intend to cancel the CN-CAW previously Negotiated Health & Safety Plan. The CAW will be going to arbitration this fall to address the issue. The CAW has asked that employees notify their Health and Safety Rep about any safety concerns at the work place.

One terminal has lost 5-6 full-time positions. CN Rail used to have part-time positions filled as well, but at this time there are no part-time employees to cover work if a full-time employee is absent. Overtime is necessary to keep the trains running on time. Intermodal traffic goes up, but staff goes down. CN Rail expects the trains to go out on time, and in a safe condition, but staff is overworked, because there are not enough of them. In fact, one worker noticed that most of the rail cars that contained 40 foot overseas containers did not have their loading guides in place. Trains are not allowed to go out without these guides placed into the cars (the guides stop the loads from swaying from side to side in the cars), important for safety with double stacked containers, but it seems that in this case the lack of employees forced the train to leave without them.

Some recent derailments have come to the attention of the media and politicians.

On August 3rd 2005 there was a derailment in Wabamun Lake Alberta that spilled toxins into the lake. 2 days later there was a derailment in Cheakamus River near Squamish BC. Both derailments spilled hazardous materials into the water. Many are saying that CN took too long to notify people of the toxic spills.

The Conductor on each train carries with him the shipping manifest with him and has access to that information at all times. Almost any CN terminal that has a clerk working at it with access to the CN Intranet can get this information within minutes.

CTV news has said that this is the 5th derailment for CN this month.

Bangladesh hit by several bomb explosions

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

Several cities and towns in Bangladesh have been rocked by around 459 small explosions occurring simultaneously. To date at least 125 people have been injured and two people have been killed. The two people killed were a bicycle rickshaw driver in the northern town of Chapainawabganj and a 10-year-old boy in the central town of Savar.

The attacks are being blamed on the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen group. Leaflets bearing the Islamic group’s message were found near many of the homemade bombs. The group is said to want to establish an Islamic state in place of current secular laws.

The bombs were apparently made to cause limited damage. The explosives were packed in small containers and wrapped in tape, paper or sawdust. Explosives created for high collateral damage would typically contain nails or other items that could be used as shrapnel.

Bangladesh currently has the world’s third largest Muslim population in the world. The Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen was banned in February after a series of bombings against non-governmental groups including holy shrines and other targets.

Add Flair To Your Home: Use Decorative Picture Frames

By Benedict Smythe

Most people look at picture frames simply as a convenient way to hang pictures on the wall. However, these frames have evolved over the years to be appreciated as an art all its own.

There are various decorative frames available. You can choose to purchase them at local malls or have a custom made frame for you specifically designed for your special piece of art. For example, bright colored frames can have words such as Its a girl! to enclose a picture of a brand new baby girl. Other frames can have shapes like cars or pets. If your budget will allow, you can also get styles that can reflect bygone eras with sophisticated elegance. Expensive frames can create drama and flair to your home.

Some people prefer a unified look, hanging the same style of frame in every room, while others will vary the style in each picture. Whats important is that you have to make sure that the frames will coordinate to some of the furniture in the room. If you have country or traditional furnishings, you can hang mostly wood frames. Or if you have a modern design, displaying metal frames usually works best.

Its best to choose wisely and look at many styles of these decorative picture frames before you decide whats best for you. There are a lot of internet sites that offer a service of browsing the pictures and comparing the appearance and price of different frames. You can even take advantage of a free feature where you can download copies of the image or art that you will frame, and you will be able to see it with the different frames around it in a wide array of style. This is very helpful especially if you are decorating or renovating your home.

Picture frames can add to your dcor or room concept. In fact, some people just hang frames without pictures to provide an artistic decoration of their wall. If you will get various ornate, gilt-edged frames, in a combination of different textures of contemporary art, you can create an interesting conversation piece and accent in your room. And these frames can be inexpensive too! Sometimes you can see some unique finds in flea markets or garage sales.

Decorative picture frames date back 3,000 years ago, and was first used as a religious art. These were the heavy frames encrusted with jewels, and laden with elaborate designs. With the start of 15th century Renaissance, the wealthy merchants and aristocrats decided to commission craftsmen to create elaborate and elegantly carved frames to enclose their portraits. They used these frames to reflect their social status. Until today, the value of hand-crafted items such as picture frames continue to be appreciated and given due recognition as artistic pieces.

Today, the evolution of picture frames bring to us materials made of brass, glass, or plastic. Yet some traditional home owners still choose the classic Baroque and Rococo for the elegance of the design.

So whatever you choose, do not forget to accentuate your home with these decorative picture frames. They are an integral part of your dcor and can truly define your unique taste.

eBay removes Canadian town’s listing of sperm whale carcass

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior.

With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules.

Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter Fenwick, put the whale up on the auction site in a bid to have it removed from the town’s premises, citing a lack of cooperation from provincial and federal government officials on the matter. “It’s your problem, you solve it”, Fenwick recounted to The Globe and Mail (TGaM) as the response he received from them. Apart from eBay, Kijiji was also suggested as another avenue by which to sell the carcass.

Fenwick told CTV News, several years prior another sperm whale measuring 15 ft was beached in the area, but disappeared without incident, an act Fenwick attributed to be the work of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “This time”, he remarked, “the authorities have told us that it’s our whale, it’s our responsibility to get rid of it.”

On putting the carcass for sale, Fenwick remarked, “We knew we had to do something with it and this seemed to be the least expensive way of disposing of it.” In a news release, Fenwick highlighted a possible use for the carcass, particularly its bones. “The 40 foot sperm whale will make a spectacular exhibit once the fat and muscle is removed, and the town is asking museums and other organizations that could use a whale skeleton to contact the town for further details.”

On retaining the whale himself, Fenwick stated, “As a town we would dearly love to keep the whale and put it on exhibit in the town but the cost of such a venture would be hard to justify.” Fenwick told TGaM the whale was “in half decent shape”. “This one looks like it died very recently and hasn’t decomposed much”, which Fenwick suggested elsewhere was due to the whale’s present location, partially submerged in near-freezing water. However, Fenwick noted its close proximity to a residential area, saying homeowners who lived there were “very interested in seeing the whale gone.”

eBay was not the only organization who barred the sale from taking place. “We also got threatened by the federal department of the environment, and told to pull the ad off or they would prosecute us”, said Fenwick on the opposition he said he received from Environment Canada, which viewed the sale as contravening a federal act designed to protect endangered species. “I received a call from the federal department of the environment saying that you’re not allowed to sell any parts of sperm whales, even if they’re dead.” he added. “So I said, ‘Oh that’s very good, I’m glad to hear that, now can you send somebody over here to get rid of it for us?'” Fenwick’s request was met with a negative response from Environment Canada.

“They’ve got to sort it out somehow. The uncertainty means it just sort of sits there and rots.” Once decomposition sets in, Fenwick remarked the carcass would become a “real nuisance”. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a whale that’s been rotting on the beach for a couple of months — actually sometimes you can’t see it for the clouds of flies around it — but you can smell it for about a mile”, he added.

On finding alternate means to dispose of the carcass, Wayne Ledwell, a member of Newfoundland’s Whale Release and Strandings, suggested the whale be towed out to a remote area. “They need to do that right away, when they come in and they’re fresh,” said Ledwell. “No one wants to go touch them … everything becomes gooey and slippery and you can’t stand up on the whale and it gets on your boots and you can’t get the smell off and then you go home and the dog rolls in it and you get it in your kitchen and you curse the whales, and you curse the government and … it becomes a mess.” Fenwick said they’d considered the idea, enlisting a local fisherman who, however, judged his engine too small for the job.

Previously, blue whale carcasses washed ashore in the towns of Trout River and Rocky Harbour, located about 150 km further north, and were taken by Royal Ontario Museum for preservation of the skeletons. Fenwick suggested the sperm whale carcass in his town might also meet a similar fate, as the sperm whale’s status as the largest toothed whale might prove to be a drawing attraction for such a facility.

Regarding what he plans to do next with the carcass, Fenwick said “If we’re not allowed to sell it, we’re willing to drop our 99 cent price down to a zero.” He said he hoped some eBay bidder stays interested in the whale. “We’ll be glad to talk to them about giving them the whale. We’re hoping that’s not illegal.” He also said he hoped the publicity from the town’s predicament, which garnered national attention, and its unusual means of finding a solution, would draw in someone interested in taking the whale off his hands at their own expense.

Should the whale fall under new ownership, Fenwick advised it be moved away from the town to a beach devoid of people, and the blubber left as food for seagulls, insects, and other predators. He estimated “It’ll probably take a year or so to get down to the skeleton.” As monetary gain was reportedly not what the town cared about, Fenwick was willing to offer the carcass for free, though one report noted money raised from the listing could have gone towards the building of a skate park.

The listing on eBay, as put up by Fenwick, read:

This 40 foot sperm whale rolled up on the beach last week. The actual seller is the town of Cape St. George which is responsible for disposing of it before it starts to decay. Once the fat and flesh is removed you have a spectacular 40 foot skeleton of the largest toothed whale in the world, great for museums and other attractions. To prevent it rotting in the town it can be towed to isolated beaches on the Port au Port Peninsula to allow the seagulls and other birds to remove the flesh. Call 709-644-2290 or 709-649-7070 for more details.

Please note the successful bidder will have to remove the whale within 30 days

Have A Breast Lift To Regain Your Youthful Appearance

Have A Breast Lift To Regain Your Youthful Appearance

by

A woman’s bust is subject to change over time for many reasons. These changes, which include the loss of the skin’s elasticity, can result from a variety of causes including pregnancy, breast-feeding, aging, genetics or just plain gravity. The consequences of these changes are that the bust line can lose its youthful tone and appearance. These changes often bring feelings of inadequacy in a woman. This is primarily because the bust is the one part of the body that defines a woman’s femininity and her individuality. Is there a solution to this problem? Yes, a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, can eliminate the problems of lost youthfulness and desirability. A breast lift raises and firms the chest by surgically eliminating excess skin while toning and tightening the surrounding tissue to help support and reshape the new contour. The end result of this surgery is a youthful new you.

This surgery is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures done today and as such is completely safe. While it will give your bust its youthful appearance once again, there are certain things it won’t do. It will not noticeably change the size of your breasts or significantly change their contour or shape. There are also some broad physical requirements that surgeons generally require you to adhere to that qualify you as a good candidate for this surgery. You are an acceptable candidate for if you are physically healthy, don’t smoke, and you have realistic outcome expectations for the procedure. While these are not the only qualifications, a consultation with a skilled plastic surgeon will help you obtain the information you need.

Since a breast lift is a specialized surgical procedure it is important that you seek out a qualified plastic surgeon. While there are many ways of going about this, a personal referral is the easiest. Another method is to use the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. They have a web site that also has a search feature to search for accredited and highly trained plastic surgeons. Talking with and using an accredited plastic surgeon specifically trained in the procedure you are contemplating is a must to give you the confidence you need to make this decision.

The procedure can be completed generally on an outpatient basis and should take no longer than two or three hours. During the surgery, intravenous sedation or a general anesthetic will be administered for your comfort. After the procedure your bust will be uncomfortable for several days but the discomfort will quickly fade. Recovery time varies but should take no longer than two to three weeks. After recovery you can resume your normal routine without any further problems. While this article is not a detailed look at the procedure we are highlighting, we strongly suggest that prior to the procedure, you have an initial consultation with a certified plastic surgeon so you can go over all the details involved in this operation including details about your recovery.

Advice On Hiring A Lawyer For Immigration

Advice on Hiring a Lawyer for Immigration

by

Ronald Shapiro

America has time and again been called the Land of Opportunity by those in other countries looking for a better life for themselves as well as their families. While many foreign individuals desire to move here and take part in the American dream, it can be quite difficult to get all of the legal paper work and red tape out of the way in order to become a permanent resident of the country. Those who are serious about making the move should consider hiring a lawyer for immigration. A lawyer for immigration is a highly educated professional who solely deals with different types of cases involving immigration.

When it comes time to hire a lawyer for immigration, you might not be sure what exactly to look for or where you can find one of these specially trained attorneys. One of the first things you need to keep in mind when searching for a lawyer for immigration cases is the individual s qualifications. You want to make sure that the attorney you hire got their degree from a highly reputable college and law school. This helps assure you that the lawyer for immigration you are hiring knows their stuff when it comes to the laws surrounding immigration.

Another key ingredient of a good lawyer for immigration is experience. The most valuable education an attorney will receive comes from taking what they learned in law school and applying it to real situations and real people. You want to try and avoid hiring a lawyer for immigration who is still new to the profession. These individuals do not have a lot of good contacts and a solid network that could work to your benefit. A good lawyer for immigration will be well established and will have years of experience in handling cases just like your own. For example, you do not want to hire an attorney who has only had three cases involving work visas when you could get an attorney who has handled hundreds of cases involving work visas.

The reputation of a lawyer for immigration is also of the utmost importance. The reputation that an attorney has amongst his or her peers in the legal profession speaks volumes about the professional character of the individual. A lawyer for immigration who has a positive reputation amongst other legal professionals is someone who can be trusted to handle your case appropriately. These professionals can also help you get through every step of the immigration process, which is often long and stressful. You will be able to speak with your attorney and ask questions regarding your status and get regular updates on how things are progressing.

When you are looking for one of these attorneys, you should ask other relatives or friends who might have gone through the process of immigration previously who they used as an attorney. You could also speak with your employer about a referral if they know and use an immigration attorney. Once you have found the right firm to represent your case, you are well on your way to making your dream come true.

What Colours To Choose For Your Hotel Room

What Colours to Choose for Your Hotel Room

by

Mitrelinen

Colour is one of the all important aspects of bedroom design and one of the prime factors to consider when arranging and decorating a room. However, though it is a central factor it is still not easy to choose and there is a lot of thought behind which colours are best.

Influence:

Many people believe that the colours around us influence the way we act and think and that some are more suitable for certain areas than others. Of course, whether this is the case or not, specific tastes are also very important and can make all the difference between how content we feel in a room.

For hotel rooms, designers tend to choose colours that reflect the appropriate mood of the room. This means that they pick colours and tones that encourage relaxation and to help provide calm and restful sleep. Make sure that you keep this in mind when choosing a colour for your bedrooms.

Neutral Colours:

Neutral colours are extremely common and also on trend at the moment. Shades of beige and cream are common, as they can be combined with a range of other colours. Other colours that promote peaceful and restful feeling are lavender, green and pink tones and even light blues.

Blues are said to create calm, serenity and are even said to delay the onslaught of nightmares. Purple is associated with happiness as well as creativity. Each and every colour has certain things attributed to it so bear this in mind.

Dark Colours:

Dark or vivid colours are not recommended as they tend to make a room appear smaller and have certain moods associated with them that are removed from ideas of calm and relaxation. The same is true for dark tones of more vibrant colours; these can overpower the room and make it seem even smaller than it is. If you want to add a bright colour; paint all the walls neutral, while adding a bright colour to one wall of the room. This prevents it from becoming overwhelming and too vibrant. Other notable colours for bedrooms include gold, wine and slate brown these all will add to the feeling of ease and relaxation in the room making them ideal.

Additional Items:

Plants and other additions can be placed in the room to add a little extra colour. Also make sure that the colour of the bedroom walls complements the furniture this is important for balance and can make all the difference for the way the room feels.

Colours can change a room completely and lay the foundation for a whole new appeal. On the other hand, they are also a great manner in which to inflict a slight change of feel. So, use them to your benefit and your room is sure to look excellent.

2008 YODEX Review: Varied competitions, Vast creations

Monday, May 26, 2008

The 27th Young Designers’ Exhibition 2008, recognized by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) as the largest show of student creations, recently ended Sunday May 18. It was held at the Taipei World Trade Center. Improvements and expansions were seen with 107 academical and industrial units. Different design competitions participated and showcased their products and also received awards.

It’s no doubt that companies related to design and cultural industries want to discover creative talents from academical units in this exhibition. However, most companies still try to showcase different conceptional and applicative products in order to promote Taiwan’s designs into the world market. A typical example is Fora Series, a photo-voltaic product series by the Tsann Kuen Trans-nation Group.

Before entering into their careers, students participated in this show and showcased varied styles that differ from the usual industrial businesspeople. To get more opportunities and in order to interact with the design and cultural industries, students also participated in vast competitions and tried to get the top places. Some students also tried to design conceptional products in conjunction with industrial designs, especially in some design competitions.

In summary, not only did the 2008 YODEX, have companies which can discover talents and showcase achievements of industrial design in the exhibition, but students can make their stages to showcase excellences from their creations in several competitions related to YODEX.

Floods spared historic Farnsworth House in Illinois

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

American preservationists breathed a sigh of relief in August as the Farnsworth House, a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed house widely considered a masterpiece of modern architecture, was spared by flooding along the Fox River in Plano.

Storms deluged much of the Midwest, causing rivers throughout the region to overflow their banks. At the Fox River in Plano flood waters spilled over four acres of the 58-acre Farnsworth House site. Waters continued to rise through August 24, until they were just 18 inches from the front door.

According to the reporting of the Chicago Tribune preservationists developed a disaster management plan on the spot. Staff used boats to access the house and once inside raised the vulnerable furnishings to higher levels atop crates.

Flooding along the Fox River in 1996 caused a large plate glass window in the steel and glass home to break, resulting in $250,000 damage and preservationists feared a repeat of that incident.

“We really lucked out and can look at this as a drill,” Barbara Campagna, architect for National National Trust for Historic Preservation, told Preservation Online.

The Farnsworth House was completed in 1951 and designed by internationally famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Chicago doctor Edith Farnsworth. The house is a National Historic Landmark and a nationally significant example of modern architecture. As one of the most famous examples of such architecture, the Farnsworth House was unprecedented at the time of its completion.
