4 Significant Reasons Why Remote Work Makes You A Better Resource

Envisioning myself lying on the sofa, maybe tucked into bed with the laptop on my lap and hot cup of coffee at my bedside. This is the kind of job I would love to do. I mean, just be a remote worker and live the best of your life.

These were my thoughts back in 2014 when I first came to know about teleworking. At that time, I was working as a full time employee in a Dallas web design company. Tired of 9 to 5 hustles, all I could imagine was comfort, coziness and freedom of work, without being bounded by rules, regulations and policies.

Although, remote working has its perks—for both employer and employee—still, that doesn’t mean that you can be indolent towards your tasks.

Contrary to popular belief, studies show that working from home makes you a better employee and you do twice the work that you would do while working in a traditional office environment.

Certainly, from better productivity to increased gratification, remote work brings betterment to your lifestyle by redefining the way you work. In fact, remote working is no less than a boon for the employees who love to stay at home and are reluctant to go through the hassles of everyday commute.

They deliver their best and emerge as a great resource when they are not being bothered by 9 to 5 struggles.

Here are a few reasons why telecommuting makes you a better resource and how it brings the best out of you.

1. Increased Productivity

Long gone are the days when remote working was deemed as an employee perk. Owing to the cultural and technological development over the last 2 decades; workplace has experienced an immense paradigm shift. Hence, the idea of remote working has been shifted from a rare perk to productivity boost for employees.

In the present era, employees willingly turn towards remote work as they find it one of the best ways to haul out their maximum potential, which enables them to give their best without having any pressure of fitting in.

To prove the efficacy of working remotely, Stanford professor Nicholas Bloom conducted a study in collaboration with a Chinese Travel Company Ctrip. Considering the super expensive office space and strenuous commutes, James Liang, CEO of Ctrip, was willing to give their employees mobile work option. Bloom formulated a quantitative test whereby 500 employees were divided into two groups; half of them continued working at HQ while half of them worked from home. The two-year study showed an astounding boost in productivity of the teleworkers as compared to those who were working at the office. The study proved that telecommuters work a true full shift or even more.

“Ctrip’s Study proved that telecommuters work a true full shift or even more.”

2. Less Commute More Energy

An average person spends 60 to 80 minutes of their precious time commuting. According to a study, people feel stressed due to arduous everyday commutes and two-thirds of employees start hunting another job to ease the commute. By eliminating the amount of time spent every day getting to and from work could result in increased energy levels and productivity.

If the employee has to take an hour-long train ride or they spend half an hour coping with the rush hour traffic, odds are thin of them getting to the work all energetic and ready for the day.

On the contrary, when you work from home, you start fresh with higher morale. Other than that, the reduction of daily travel enables you to save the cost you spend on fares and fuel. So it’s more like hitting two birds with one stone.

3. Reduced Attrition Rate

According to a study, losing a valuable resource could cost the employer over $30,000. While recruiting and training a new employee could cost even more. Flexible working and telecommuting is known to help reduce workforce attrition; eventually, it helps companies save time, money and effort spent on hiring and training procedures.

Ctrip experiment proved that the employees who were working from home were observed with 50% less attrition and fewer sick leaves as compared to those who were working in a traditional workplace setting. Also, the company saved $2,000 by saving the cost on per employee’s office space. All in all, remote work opportunities result in reduced employee turnovers and attrition by 25 to 50%.

4. Improved Health and Happiness

If you compromise on your personal wellbeing, you would never be able to be fully productive and beneficial to your company. Sense of fulfillment is key when it comes to workplace satisfaction. Contrary to popular belief, fulfillment is not only about being paid a hefty amount every month, there is a lot more to it than this.

Believe it or not, people have had enough of the everyday rat-race, they just want to take control of their lives and are eager to find a balance between work and life. Flexible workplace gives them the liberty to prioritize things while maintaining the order of what should be done when as per their convenience.

Teleworking allows you to lead a lifestyle where you are in charge of putting things in order as you can mold schedules. In a nutshell, it allows you to live a life where you can earn well and live well, simultaneously.

“Teleworking enables you to live a life where you can earn well and live well, simultaneously.”

Conclusion

Putting it together, over the past few years, teleworking has gone beyond being just a trend or a privilege. Unsettling the rules of the traditional workplace, it’s been morphed into a norm and a way of life, which is here to stay. From employee retention to decreased attrition and improved personal wellbeing, there are several benefits that remote works allows you to take advantage of.

It’s time for you to start your journey as a remote worker and discover what you’ve been missing out on.

Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

Will The Great British Economy Ever Return To Former Glory?

By Chris Andrews

As the Eurozone crisis continues to threaten fiscal unity, British economy suffers as a result of the rippling effects caused by the potential Greek bailout; leaving mortgage rates rising, lending at an all-time low and fifteen of the worlds biggest banks downgraded, three of which are Britains principal firms.

The ripples are indeed devastating and have left Britains businesses, big and small, crippled with debt, with one question left unanswered; is the British business sector going to continue upon the downhill spiral or will it ever manage to see a boost?

In the first quarter of 2012 it was revealed that an astonishing 670 UK businesses had gone bust as the country slumped into a double dip recession and despite continuing please from retail specialists that SME businesses required assistance with commercial mortgages; the government failed to take action. The continuing EU crisis has indeed had a phenomenally negative effect on the UK business market as banks and lenders across the country tighten the reigns of over lending restriction and remain reluctant to extend credit to struggling businessesit is hard to see a way out.

There have been numerous high profile casualties at the height of the double dip recession and as a result of the EU power members failing to find common ground it seems as though the struggle is set to continue as fiscal unity reaches breaking point however all may not be lost.

In June it was announced that the Bank of England will finally breathe life into the economy with an unconfirmed cash stimulus injection designed to assist business mortgage and home mortgage owners by enabling banks to ease their lending restrictions. The plan aims to, over the coming months, inject Britains struggling banks with an unknown stimulus sum on the basis that mortgage rates are lowered and an increasing number of small business are offered commercial mortgage and business loans. Alongside the cash stimulus, the Bank of England has also introduced a 5billion lending scheme that will see it auction off a 5billion injection to one bank a month beginning from July on the basis that the winning bank substantially lower interest rates.

The past few years have been a struggle for the overall British economy and the business sector however in wake of the ever deepening EU crisis; Chancellor Osborne and the monetary committee have finally begun to prove that Britain is strong, can with stand and come out the other end.

Many may argue that the British business sector has suffered far too much to ever fully recover and one cannot help but agree. Such action should have been taken in immediate wake of disaster and indeed it was in the form of quantitive easing (QE) although it did create a level of ease on the economy it did not have the ultimate effect on British economy as saver rates were hit severely, small businesses were continuously denied loans and struggling businesses failed to see credit extended. The monetary committee have decided to take further action, despite the threat facing savers, by beginning the next batch of quantitive easing with a reported 50billion to be injected into the economy.

Unlike our struggling EU Partners; Britain has the means to stand tall however as with all difficult tasks; nothing is achieved with ease, in fact this is the most danger our economy has faced in a long time which means escape will be far from easy. Only time will tell whether Britain will return to former glory however with continuing efforts, governmental support and monetary aid we have a good a chance as any.

Gay couple elected prom king and queen in Maine’s Sanford High School

Friday, June 3, 2011

Although prom may have taken place over two weeks ago at Maine’s Sanford High School, the fact that students elected a gay couple as prom king and queen remains the talk of the local community.

During the May 14 event, 17-year-old Christian Nelsen was named prom queen, running as a write-in candidate. One of Nelsen’s friends, Holly Smith, spoke of the help they provided in getting him elected: “The day of prom, we went downstairs, and he was yelling ‘Vote for Christian Nelsen!’ And I was helping people spell his name, or telling them how to write it on the ballot”.

Anyone can win, and on that same notion any type of person can win.

Nelsen’s boyfriend, Caleb Jett, was elected prom king. “I kinda got voted in because he got queen, and it was like ‘Who do we vote for king?’ and it was like ‘Oh, well, his boyfriend, obviously, because that makes sense,'” he said. The two young men wore suits, shirts, and ties to the prom. When the results of the election were announced, they danced the king-queen dance together, Jett wearing his crown and Nelsen his tiara.

Maine is one of only two states in New England that have not recognized same-sex marriages. Though they are aware that not everyone supports them, the couple ran to combat high school stereotypes and to encourage more tolerance. Nelsen commented, “It doesn’t matter if it’s a guy or a girl who wins prom king or prom queen from now on. Anyone can win, and on that same notion any type of person can win. And I’m talking about the tolerance level of all people when I talk about that, so anyone who is bullied or even just under the radar can win this type of thing.”

Minister of a parish of the United Church of Christ Reverend Diane Wendorf supported the couple, citing her church’s values of tolerance and diversity. “I’m glad, too, that they were crowned king and queen, because there are all different kinds of people in this world.” Some Sanford residents a local news agency interviewed did not approve of the gay couple’s crowning, though none agreed to go on camera — out of concerns that their comments might offend someone.

The matter is expected to be brought up by interested citizens at an upcoming school committee meeting. Committee Chair Mark Lucier stated that the school is gathering information on the election, and that the committee may decide if it needs to address the future selection of prom kings and queens.

Botox In Laserase Belfast: How To Be Safe, In A Largely Unregulated Industry

Botox in laserase Belfast: How to be safe, in a largely unregulated industry

by

Therese

In the UK, there are approximately 5,000 clinics, spas and salons which offer injectable treatments such as Botox (Botulinum Toxin), they carry out 200,000 procedures annually. In 2009 the number of procedures increased by 25%.

In August 2010, a government backed register was launched for those who offer injectable cosmetic treatments, such as Botox. Those who meet the standards as set out for The Independent Healthcare Advisory Services register, will receive a quality assurance mark. The IHAS hope that their new register will discourage ‘Botox parties’ and unqualified individuals from attempting these procedures. They are also keen that the treatments are only carried out in clean and safe clinical locations. The IHAS require all who sign up to their register to complete a face to face consultation prior to any treatment, which will prevent drop in clinics. The IHAS believe injectable treatments should only be carried out those with relevant medical training such as Doctors and registered Nurses. They are trying to eliminate unqualified Beauticians from the industry in an attempt to make the procedures safer. Due to the nature of the substance ‘Botulinum Toxin’, things can go wrong (in a very small number of cases) and in the event of a patient having an allergic reaction, the IHAS feel that beauticians are unqualified and unprepared to potentially have to save someone’s life. In Belfast, believe it or not, some people are putting themselves at risk by receiving cheap treatments from inexperienced providers. Some people are prepared to have a potentially poisonous substance injected into their skin by someone who has no formal qualifications and does not fully understand what they are doing. Unqualified providers of Botox who don’t inject it correctly can cause lumps on your skin, asymmetry and even permanent damage to your skin. Is it really worth the risk? Dr Donal Mckeown, of Laserase Medical Skincare Clinic in Belfast offers advice to anyone considering Botox, or any other injectable treatment. Dr McKeown is a graduate of Queens University Belfast Medical School and is a member of The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD). He urges those who are considering such treatments to make sure the provider is safe before they receive any treatment. Ensure they are fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD). Also ensure the clinic is fully registered with the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA).

U.S. February budget deficit is largest on record

Saturday, March 12, 2011

The U.S. Treasury Department reported the government posted a monthly budget deficit of US$222.5 billion in February, the largest monthly deficit ever recorded. The February deficit, announced on Thursday, outstripped the February revenue gain of $110 billion.

The report comes at a time when the White House and both national political parties are under extreme pressure to reduce the deficit as well as the total U.S. debt. There is no agreement on how to reduce spending and increase government revenue, and both Democratic and Republican measures have been voted down.

Factors contributing to the February 2011 deficit compared to that of February 2010 included a 69% reduction in corporate tax receipts, and an increase of 29% in interest payments due on the U.S. debt. The government also spent more than in the previous February on entitlement programs, including an increase of 11% on Medicare. Government measures, such as an extension of unemployment insurance benefits, cuts in the payroll tax and some business tax reductions also contributed to the deficit.

The White House has predicted that the U.S. budget deficit will reach $1.6 trillion this year and then fall to $1.1 trillion in 2012. Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, has warned that by April 15 of this year, the U.S. is likely to reach its $14.3 trillion borrowing limit.
