Yesterday, the deadline expired for the rainbow colored sidewalk located at Rainbow Oxford St, Taylor Square in Sydney, Australia to remain intact.
The pedestrian crossing had been painted with the colors of the rainbow to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT) pride march in Sydney during this year’s Mardi Gras celebrations, at a cost of AU$11,000 and, according to a spokesman for the City of Sydney, it had a very positive impact for local tourism and within the community.
The initial idea plan was to conduct a month long pilot and, if positive, keep the crossing painted in rainbow colors for twelve month period. However, the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) warned of the potential danger the painted the road could pose for drivers and demanded the road be painted over. Despite an online petition gathered almost 15,000 signatures to save the rainbow, the Roads Minister Duncan Gay and Premier Barry O’Farrell decided not to meet the requests from the City of Sydney for the road to remain with the colors of rainbow.
A spokeswoman for Gay’s office cited road safety hazard and unsafe behavior as the reason for removal, including people who sat in the road to take pictures. Alex Greenwich, the local representative from Sydney in the New South Wales state government, had organised the petition earlier and said Gay exaggerated the potential safety hazards, and said that people took pictures during the parade of Mardi Gras, when there was no traffic.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore also disputed Mr Gay’s claims, citing no safety hazards, “The audit also shows that generally the risk to the public of having the rainbow crossing is low. This is bureaucracy gone wild — the Minister wants to remove the crossing because he doesn’t like some pictures that people have been taking. Those pictures are a drop in the ocean compared to the tens of thousands of other pictures of the crossing that have … promoted Oxford St as one of the best LGBT tourism destinations in the world.” The walk is scheduled to be painted over this week and will cost about AU$35,000.
Wednesday, February 23, 2005A compound in the common daisy-like plant feverfew kills human leukemia stem cells and could form the basis for newer, more effective drugs for the disease.
American researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York say that it could take months to develop a useable drug from the compound, parthenolide.
However, they are working to do so with chemists at the University of Kentucky who have identified a water-soluble molecule with the same properties. The US National Cancer Institute has also accepted the work into its rapid access program, which aims to speed experimental drugs into human clinical trials.
“This research is a very important step in setting the stage for future development of a new therapy for leukemia,” says Rochester researcher Craig Jordan. “We have proof that we can kill leukemia stem cells with this type of agent, and that is good news.”
Parthenolide appears to target the roots of myeloid leukemia, stem cells, while current treatments including the relatively new drug Gleevec don’t. So, “You’re pulling the weed without getting to the root,” says Jordan.
Used for centuries to fight fevers, inflammation and arthritis, feverfew earned interest from the Rochester researchers after other scientists showed that it could prevent skin cancer in animal models.
So the researchers investigated how a concentrated form of the plant component parthenolide would affect leukemia cells and normal cells.
Comparing the impact of parthenolide to the common chemotherapy drug cytarabine, they found that parthenolide selectively killed leukemia cells while sparing normal cells better.
While the findings suggest that parthenolide is a good starting point for new drugs, people with leukemia aren’t being encouraged to take high doses of feverfew as they could not take enough of the remedy to halt the disease.
The research is reported in the journal Blood.

Forex trading is a short form for foreign exchange trading. As the name suggests, it concerns itself with trading over currencies of different currencies. In other words, it simply refers to currency trading. However, it is easier said than done. It is a highly complex process, given the constant variations and fluctuations in the world market, be it the stock market, the commodity market or the currency market. So to be able to trade in currency, one has to have a strong understanding about all the market systems and the different kinds of financial instruments like bonds, derivatives etc. and how the different companies in the different sectors are doing. Not only that, because it involves trading over currencies, it demands an in-depth knowledge of the entire economy of the at least the two countries on whose currencies the trading is being done. There are several kinds of
forex trading systems
and one must sift through as many of them as possible before committing on a particular one.
As they say, it is much better to have a preventive measure than have a cure. So instead of waiting for something wrong to happen, you should be equipped with the necessary knowledge from beforehand so that you do not have to face any contingencies while trading on the forex. One of the first things you should know about forex trading is that it is entirely done over the Internet. So you must be reasonably proficient with computers and working over the Internet. You must realize that the foreign exchange market is really very volatile, hence you must have the forex trading systems
in complete grasp.
In the earlier Bretton Woods system, the price of currencies relative to a particular currency used to be fixed. However, liberalization in terms of the foreign currency market has meant that the relative prices of currencies with respect to one another are now decided by the forex market. As has been stated earlier, it is better to have thorough knowledge of the matter before indulging in the complex trading. For this, it is better to enroll yourself in a forex trading course. Even though there can be interventions by central banks, this market is often referred to as one having the highest possible level of competition, which is arguably the best thing that can happen to any market, as that leaves the fixing of the prices of the traded item (in this case, currency) entirely on the market forces. Many private firms are engaged in the forex trading business, and the average daily turnover is reportedly said to be in the tune of about US $4 trillion! This mammoth transaction amount can be broken up into outright forwards, forex swaps, options, spot transactions, options etc. Of these, spot transactions and currency swaps alone account for over US $3 trillion! As expected, the forex trading market has the highest level of liquidity among all market systems. The top ten traders in currency include Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Citi, Goldman Sachs, HSBC etc. Having a forex trading guide is highly recommended.
Envelope Profit System will provide the wannabe forex trader with the extra edge for succeeding in

Mr Justice Saunders today imprisoned a man for eight years at the Old Bailey in London after an FBI sting in which he tried to buy ricin on the Dark Web.
| Everyone needs to know that the possession of a chemical weapon is extremely serious and long prison sentences will follow | ||
Mohammed Ali, 31, from Liverpool, was convicted at trial of attempting to possess a chemical weapon. He told the jury he was “curious” about the Dark Web, which is a largely hidden and difficult to police section of the Internet. Ali said he didn’t realise he had done anything illegal.
Ali was prosecuted under the Chemical Weapons Act 1996 after sending an undercover agent a message reading “Hi, would you be able to make me some ricin and send it to the UK?” He bought 500mg, which has the potential to kill about 1,400, but was sent a dummy package. Counter-terror police in the UK liaised with the FBI.
The powder, which Ali paid for in BitCoin, was actually harmless. Hidden inside a toy car, the package was treated with markers and his face glowed under ultraviolet light, indicating he had handled it. The judge said today there was “real risk” involved.
Ali told his trial he had discovered drugs and guns for sale. Computer analysis showed he had looked up ricin and other poisons; he said he went for ricin simply because it had appeared in Breaking Bad. He also searched for small animals after being advised to test it on a rodent; a to-do list on his computer included “paid ricin guy” and “get pet to murder”.
Mr Justice Saunders said the case called for “a deterrent sentence”, which “will appear harsh to the defendant and his family.” “Everyone needs to know that the possession of a chemical weapon is extremely serious and long prison sentences will follow.”
Things to Take Care of While Finding the Mortgage Lender
by
kellyprice1225
News about mortgage is constantly making headlines these days. It all started with the financial crisis that the financial world encountered and continued till the financial reforms that was introduced recently. A lot of changes have come over the real estate and financial assistance markets in result. Yet one thing remains unchanged in respect of mortgages even today and despite such reforms. Any loan requires a mortgage lender that will sanction such loans. When someone is looking for the financier that would extend such loans, they should be abreast of certain factors that greatly influence the selection.
Searching for the appropriate lender can also be carried out online. A host of sites offer such information but it is always good looking for an educative and informative site that will offer authentic information. Such site will match the prospective borrower with quality lenders that offers financial assistance on good terms and conditions.
At the same time visiting the brick and mortar mortgage lender would be good. Especially the bank that has the current account of the prospective borrower would be a good place to look for such assistance. Comparing and contrasting the terms and conditions of offer will help choosing the perfect moneylender. An interesting feature of obtaining mortgage loans like home loans is that some of the providers offer lower rates of interests than others.
One of the ways of finding the best lender would be asking the realtor with which the prospective borrower is currently working. Since such realtor would be well conversant with the mortgage issues and can help select the best lender properly. Of course it will not be right going for the lender suggested without comparing the terms and conditions with others.
Making list of multiple lenders and their offers will help make the correct comparison and select the best suited to requirements and budget of the prospective borrower. Such list helps comparing every aspect of the loans. Taking stock of different types of closing costs, APR, fees related to applications and potency of the loans will be necessary for selecting the best lender.
One should not be carried out by promises of speedy closings advanced by the providers. Moreover the law of land now ensures that the lenders also ensure that borrower now has the capability of repayment of loans.
Eligibility checking is mandatory for the lenders after all.
Lenderstreets.com is the mortgage match maker that not only takes the borrower to such
mortgage lender
that will offer the best terms and conditions. Getting the best
mortgage
becomes easier for the borrower in such cases.

Chemotherapy is usually associated with a collection of side effects ranging from digestive problems to hair loss, but a study published this week in Human Reproduction demonstrated that female cancer patients may find they have something in common with much younger women in one specific area — their ovaries.
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh examined donated ovarian tissue from fourteen female cancer patients, most of whom had Hodgkin lymphoma, and compared it to tissue from healthy women. They found the samples from women who had been treated with a specific chemotherapeutic regimen known as ABVD not only contained greater numbers of dormant ova — egg cells — than those from women treated with harsher regimens but also more than samples from healthy women. ABVD is named for combining several drugs known as adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine.
These reproductive cells were not merely more plentiful in ABVD patients. They also appeared immature, “new” in the words of lead researcher Evelyn Telfer. This challenges the conventional belief that girls are born with all the ova they will ever have and the numbers can only go down as the cells are either used up by the reproductive cycle or succumb to damage or natural aging. However, further research is needed to confirm this. The study covered relatively few patients by scientific standards, and David Albertini of the Center for Human Reproduction in New York has suggested the cells may not actually be freshly grown. Instead, they may have always been there and were merely rendered more detectable by ABVD treatment.
The ability to grow new egg cells may have significant implications for women in Western societies, many of whom postpone childbearing to establish careers, sometimes into their late thirties or forties. However, Telfer warns against making use of these findings too soon: “There’s so much we don’t know about the ovary. We have to be very cautious about jumping to clinical applications.”
The experiments had been discussed earlier this year at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.
