Mongolia’s ex-communists ahead going into Sunday’s election

Sunday, May 22, 2005

“Communism was much better,” said Tsahiriin Daariimaa Saturday on the eve of Mongolia‘s presidential elections. Polls predict that many Mongolians plan to vote for their former communist rulers — the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP).

Under communism, “everyone worked for the collective farm,” Daariimaa said. None of her children has a steady job these days.

Myatav Choijav is a Mongolian who shares that view; “Now, some people are very rich and some are very poor. In the old times, the government took better care of us ordinary people,” Choijav said. “Now, the government is very far away from us, especially if you live in the countryside and take care of sheep. Everyone was equal under communist rule,” Choijav said.

Tseveenjav, a 70-year-old sheep herder, agrees: “I will support the MPRP. They always do the right thing.”

Tseveenjav wears the traditional Mongolian thick boots and hat while sitting upon his horse with a dead marmot hung from his saddle. Falcon and Tiger, his sheepdogs, help him keep watch over 500 sheep.

Sambuu Ganbaator, a member of the Democratic Party, has a different opinion from most of his neighbors.

“Too many people forget what the MPRP did to Mongolia,” he said. “They kept Mongolia under a brutal dictatorship. You weren’t allowed to speak your mind.” Now, he said, “you can say anything you want to say and do what you want to live a happy life.”

The MPRP’s candidate, Nambariin Enkbayar, leads the polls and the ex-communist party has said that it is now committed to democracy.

2007 Taipei IT Month exposed problems on traffic jams

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Although the 2007 Taipei IT Month closed last Sunday (December 9), it attracted more than 750,000 people to visit the show, but it exposed some problems especially on the traffic factor.

Generally on weekdays (December 3-7), the traffic jam at Shi-fu Road often took place in the afternoon as many schools visited the show and several sightseeing buses sometimes parked there for patronages on students. In comparison with Sung-shou Road, Shi-fu Road was sometimes obstructed but not as serious than on weekends because the official shuttle buses played a key role on transportation.

On the opposite way of two weekends (December 1, 2, 8, and 9), it exposed traffic problems as many people visited the show, even though the Traffic Division of Taipei City Police Department set medians around the Taipei World Trade Center and the Taipei 101, and it apparently decreased violations on illegal crossing, Shi-fu Road and Sung-shou Road were still trapped in traffic jams than on weekdays.

Before the launch of the TWTC Nangang in March 2008, governments and show organizers will focus on the traffic issue at the Taipei World Trade Center during the construction of the MRT Taipei World Trade Center Station.

Fitness and exercise are gaining popularity over the past decades for many reasons. People engage in these activities to improve their circulatory, respiratory, and immune system. Others exercise to eliminate stress and anxiety from their busy lives. Regardless of the reasons, many people are seriously working put and are gaining minimal results. This happens because of misconceptions about exercise are some reasons that prevent many individuals from getting in shape. Understanding these misconceptions are essential in achieving one’s desired results.

Many individuals think that going to the gym and spending excess time is a great way to develop results fast. People who want to improve their health should bear in mind that there are no short cuts in physical fitness. Too much training may hinder muscle growth rather than develop them. In working out, the resting phase is as important as the training period. Too much training may lead to fatigue and cause more harm than good. Over-training in men may temporarily reduce sperm count and quality. This happens because the body literally kills itself during work outs. To build muscles and improve the body, the body needs to rest to attain normal cell development. Too much physical activity may reduce the level of hormones in the blood stream that affects sperm production. The good news is, the sperm levels may return to normal levels after three days.

Many exercises with dumbbells are beneficial in preventing plateaus from occurring, a period when one’s weight doesn’t change. Some plateaus last for weeks while others for months. Using dumbbells can give effective and affordable workout in the privacy of one’s home. In addition there are also many cheap fitness accessories that are easy to use like fitness balls and resistance bands. Consult health professionals to know exercises that can be done with these accessories.

Working out oftentimes doesn’t require the use equipments, anaerobic exercises like push-ups, pull-overs, and pull-backs are typically performed to develop power and tone the muscles. Some health studies claim that these anaerobic exercises should be done in repetitions of 100 for maximum development.

Plyometric training is another way of developing speed and power without the use of weights and other equipments. This kind of training seeks to improve the reaction of individuals through vigorous muscle contraction because fast extraordinary contractions. Examples of lower body plyometric exercises are: standing jumps, tuck jumps, split jumps and long jumps. Upper body plyometric exercises may include press and hand claps. Another method for developing one’s upper body may be done with the use of a medicine ball. A partner drops a medicine ball towards the chest of another person who catches the ball and throws it back This method is considered a high intensity exercise and should only be done after basic conditioning.

Individuals who decide to include a regular program of physical activity are encouraged to consult doctors and other health professionals for exercise advice. This is important because a lot of individuals tend to workout too much, improperly, and use the inappropriate equipments. Understanding proper workout and including a healthy diet in one’s lifestyle may lead to improved health and overall well-being.

Malaysian government warns citizens about Uncyclopedia

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.

The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.

The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.

There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.

Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:

Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.

…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”

There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.

Sub-prime lenders send jitters through global markets

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Just two weeks after China sent global markets into a tumble, growing worries about sub-prime mortgage lenders in the United States are sending jitters through stock exchanges around the globe. The three major US stock market indices each fell two percent from Monday’s closing price, marking the second-biggest loss of 2007. London’s FTSE 100, Paris’ CAC 40 and Frankfurt’s DAX 30 indices each closed down more than 1 percent.

As the Mortgage Bankers Association reported that late payments on mortgages and home foreclosures in the US homes rose in the fourth quarter to their highest level in years, investors are concerned that not only US banks but also multi-national banks around the globe could have exposure.

More than two dozen sub-prime lenders have closed or sold operations as defaults on those mortgages have risen. “The delinquencies and defaults have started to soar,” said Nicolas Retsinas, director of Housing Studies at Harvard University. “A lot of these lenders started to make loans and lost track of some of the fundamentals.”

New Century Financial Corporation, the second largest sub-prime lender in the US, has recently revealed that its creditors were no longer providing funds and, further, it has become subject of an SEC investigation. The New York Stock Exchange has said it will delist New Century. Accredited Home Loan Lending, another major sub-prime mortgage specialist, said it was seeking fresh capital and waivers on its lending covenants.

Sub-prime lenders provide mortgages to people who do not qualify for loans from mainstream lenders, typically due to their credit histories. The lenders then bundle these mortgages as collateral for loans that they obtain from other financing firms, such as GMAC. Such firms can then repackage these loans and sell them as mortgage-backed securities. These securities may end up in the hands of major multi-national banks such as Citibank, HSBC, and Commerzbank. Each level of lending assumes a level of financial risk, but trouble can arise when the risk tolerances are exceeded. If too many homeowners default on their mortgages, the sub-prime lender can end up defaulting. If too many of these lenders default, as it is feared may be happening now, the defaults can cascade upward. While no one is predicting major bank failures at this point, it is feared that their profits could be hurt.

Train derails in South Africa; at least two dead

Thursday, April 22, 2010

A luxury train derailed in South Africa outside the capitol of Pretoria yesterday, killing at least two people and leaving 25 injured.

The train had been entering a station in Pretoria when seventeen cars derailed, apparently during a switch between steam and electric locomotives, although the exact cause is not known. The train had been coming from Cape Town, with 55 passengers and an unknown number of crew on board.

None of the dead were identified, and nationalities were not released. However, a spokesperson for the operator of the train, Rovos Rail, said that passengers were from several different countries, and that most customers of the railroad were from the US or Europe.

Chris Botha, an emergency worker at the scene said that the derailment had produced “absolute carnage.” According to him, “[s]ome of the railway coaches are lying on top of each other and absolute wreckages. They had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to cut some of the people free.” The section of track where the incident occurred has been closed off.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Compare Auto Insurance Quotes And Policies To Get Your Best Deal

Compare Auto Insurance Quotes And Policies – To Get Your Best Deal

by

Steven Harry

Paying for car insurance is often considered a necessary evil as it doesn’t provide immediate benefits and can be seen as an extra cost that isn’t justified. However, you will be glad of the coverage if something does happen and you watch the medical bills and repair costs pile up. Just like with any kind of purchase, though, you need to compare auto insurance quotes and policies to make sure you are not overpaying.

Good Driving Record When you compare auto insurance quotes you will find that they all have one thing in common. They all price according to the risk you present to the insurer and one way of judging that risk is through your driving record. If you have filled with accidents and other driving related problems you will find your premiums are much higher than if you were a little more tempered behind the wheel. The more problems you have had in the past, the higher the risk the insurer will be taking that you will be filing multiple claims so the company will want to protect itself from your reckless driving by charging you more. Risk is also calculated according to statistics and even your age can affect how high your premiums are, so you should want to do everything in your power to keep those costs down. Compare Auto Insurance Quotes When taking out an auto insurance policy you need to compare auto insurance quotes from a number of providers because the premiums can vary greatly. You wouldn’t consider making any other large investment without shopping around first and your auto insurance should be no different. Make sure you get at least three quotes from different companies and also do a little research into the company you are thinking of singing on with. You need to make sure the company is financially stable because you don’t want to end up with all the money having gone to waste. Compare Auto Insurance Policies Remember when you compare auto insurance quotes that they are also based on the coverage you will be receiving. It isn’t enough to just look at the quotes themselves, but you will also need to check what each policy includes. You may find that a slightly higher quote is in fact more cost effective because it includes more coverage. You also want to make sure you aren’t buying too much insurance. For example, there is little point in buying insurance against flooding if you live in the middle of a desert just as it is useless purchasing an insurance policy that covers rental cars if you rent a car once every five years. Even though car insurance is mandatory by law, you also need to make sure that those payouts will reasonably cover the expenses you may incur in the event of an accident. For example if you have replacement coverage only worth $15,000 then you may need to consider raising the limit as most new cars cost somewhere around the $25,000 mark. Also, it is a good idea to compare auto insurance policies before you buy a car because the make and model can also affect the premium on your insurance policy.
