Canadian MP Benoit Sauvageau dies in car crash

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Bloc Quebecois Member of Parliament Benoit Sauvageau was killed in an automobile accident on Monday morning after his vehicle hit a tow truck at the side of a road in his Montreal constituency.

Sauvageau, 42, had been an MP since 1993 and represented the riding of Repentigny at the time of his death.

Bloc Québécois (BQ) Leader Gilles Duceppe, speaking in Quebec City, remembered Sauvageau as a hard-working representative who was widely respected “not only in the sovereigntist camp but by his adversaries who always recognized him for his honesty and his determination.”

“I think he was a very good member of Parliament, a very good sovereigntist,” added Duceppe.

Visibly shaken by the news, Duceppe said: “It’s awful, at 42 with four children (daughters) between the ages of five and 15, it’s not right.”

Former Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard, who led the BQ when Sauvageau was first elected, told Radio Canada: “It’s a tragedy. It’s unbelievable that he died like that.”

“He is a man who was engaged in political fights but he did it correctly, with nobility and idealism and a lot of respect for others, even his adversaries,” said Bouchard.

Sauvageau was a history professor before entering politics. As an MP he was the Bloc’s spokesperson on public accounts and the treasury board and was also the party’s critic responsible for the Official Languages Act and the rights of Francophones outside of Quebec.

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary caucus, I would like to express my deepest sadness and regret at the news of the death of Benoît Sauvageau in a tragic car accident in Repentigny this afternoon,” said interim Liberal leader Bill Graham.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the prayers and thoughts of all Parliamentarians are with Sauvageau’s loved ones at this difficult time.

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Teen charged over ‘bomb attempt’ at US Christmas celebration

Saturday, November 27, 2010

The threat was very real. Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale.

A 19-year-old Oregon, U.S. resident has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction after a sting operation; authorities say Mohamed Osman Mohamud, born in Somalia, tried to detonate a van bomb using a mobile phone at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland.

The device, police stated, was fake; he reportedly obtained it from undercover agents during a sting operation. Reports say Mohamud, a US citizen, had been in regular contact with somebody in north-west Pakistan.

Authorities intercepted e-mails they say were between Mohamud and this contact in August 2009. Holton reassured Oregon residents, adding that there was “no reason to believe there is any continuing threat arising from this case”. Mohamud allegededly told an FBI agent “I want whoever is attending that event to leave, to leave either dead or injured.” Dwight Holton, a U.S. attorney, described Mohamud’s “chilling determination” as a “stark reminder that there are people—even here in Oregon—who are determined to kill Americans.”

An FBI agent told reporters “[t]he threat was very real. Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale. I want to reassure the people of this community that, at every turn, we denied him the ability to actually carry out the attack.” On the day of the tree lighting ceremony, he drove a vehicle to the area where the event was to be held, and was arrested, prosecutors said, twenty minutes before the tree was to be lit. He kicked at agents as they tried to apprehend him and shouted “Allahu Akbar!” (God is great!).

Court papers indicated that an undercover agent told Mohamud that he was an associate of the Pakistani contact. When the agent and Mohamud discussed the plan, Mohamud said that he wanted a “huge mass that will be attacked in their own element with their families celebrating the holidays”. Mohamud told the agent that he had wanted to carry out a jihad (holy war) against the U.S. since he was fifteen years old.

www.easyinsuranceindia.com makes your insurance purchase very easy. Private car insurance: Every body knows motor insurance is mandatory by law. For every motorized vehicle it may be two wheeler or four wheeler, whether it is used for private or commercial purposes, insurance policy is mandatory according to the Indian Law. So every body purchases an insurance policy for their vehicle. But only few know the details of the policy. Generally people will call an agent or go to a nearest insurance company to purchase a policy. The agent will quote some amount as premium. They will pay the amount and collect the policy. They dont know the exact details of the policy. Because of this they will face many kind of problem if they have to file a claim. First the agent may have under valued the vehicle to quote a lower premium. For example the present value of a vehicle is 40000/=, but in the policy it may be given as 30000/=.So if your vehicle is stolen you can only get 30000. So you lose 10000 because of the insurance agents fault. The persons traveling in a vehicle (Pillion rider in case of two-wheeler) have to be covered separately, so that if any thing happens to them while traveling, insurance company will compensate for their loss. If the agent did not add this at the time of policy under writing, nothing can be claimed on the precious lives. Like these there are so many things in a motor policy. I am going to explain some of them. Most of these explanations are related to private car insurance and two-wheeler insurance. Motor insurance policy is divided into two sections. One is Own Damage and the other one is Third Party Liability. Own Damage Own damage section covers your risk. If any thing happens to your vehicle insurance company will compensate you for that damage usually after a surveyor inspection. IRDA gives guideline rates for own damage. But Insurance companies are allowed to change it. Because of this you are getting different types of premiums from different companies. Insurance companies will fix the own damage rate based on the claims settled for that particular model throughout India. Third Party Liability Damage(TPPD) If your vehicle cause any damage to any person or any person’s property, insurance company will compensate for that damage. These claims are settled through court. Tariff for this section is fixed by IRDA. The first thing in a motor policy is IDV or Insured Declared Value. (IDV)Insured Declared Value: The IDV is calculated as follows. Your vehicles current market price is taken as base value. Then standard depreciation will be applied on the current market price to get your vehicles present value which is called as IDV. The standard depreciation is fixed by IRDA (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority). IRDA only specifies Depreciation for vehicle which is less than five years old. For vehicles older than five years IDV will be fixed by the insurance company based on the vehicle condition. So what is the right IDV for your car or two-wheeler? First consider the IDV given to you by the company. If you have maintained your vehicle in good condition, if your vehicle is not damaged in any accident you can increase your IDV by considerable amount. But if you think your vehicle is not in good condition or if it is damaged in any accidents you can decrease the IDV of the vehicle. But at any time dont reduce your IDV only for the purpose of lowering the premium. Because saving 100 or 200 rupees when buying a policy, will reduce 10000 or 20000 rupees in the compensation amount you get if you file a claim. In the same way if you overvalue your vehicle you cant get the same amount if you file a claim. You will only get depreciated market value of the vehicle. Electrical/Electronics accessories Above mentioned IDV covers your car only. That is, for anything you paid additionally to fit in your car you have to insure it additionally. Any accessories which are not included in the manufacturers selling price have to be insured separately. In insurance parlance it is Electrical/Electronics accessories. So do remember to add your accessories when you insure your vehicle next time.

Co passenger cover/Pillion passenger cover: If you look at the liability section in your insurance policy you can see TPPD liability premium and compulsory PA Cover. Some polices may have co passenger cover and paid driver liability. This co passenger cover and paid driver liability is optional covers. You should include this for your policy. Compulsory PA cover covers the registered owner of the vehicle. So if you employ any driver even for a day and if anything happens to that driver, you may not be allowed to file a claim because the driver is not covered in the policy. So always add this cover. Similarly the persons traveling in the car(Pillion rider in case of two wheeler) have to be insured separately. If this optional cover is included in the policy,Insurance company will compensate if any thing happens to the co passengers. Co passengers can be insured from 10,000 to 2,00,000. Paid driver cover (Rs 25/=),Co passenger cover(Rs 5/= per passenger per Rs 10000/=) Pillion rider cover(Rs 7/= per Rs 10000/=) may cost you more when you purchase a policy. But if any thing happens you can get some amount of compensation.

Discounts: Voluntary deductible discount: If a private car is damaged in a accident and the damage cost is less than Rs 500/= you cannot file a claim(Rs 500/= for vehicles less than 15000CC. exceeding 1500CC It is Rs 1000/=). This is called compulsory deductible. For two wheelers compulsory deductible is Rs 50/=. You can increase the deductible amount if you wish. For this you will get discount on your own damage premium. This is called Voluntary deductible discount. If you are in remote area you can opt for voluntary deductible discount because of filing a claim and getting the money may be a lengthy and cumbersome process. Voluntarily deductible amount discount for private car Rs 2500/= 20% on OD. maximum Rs 750/= Rs 5000/= 25% on OD. maximum Rs 1500/= Rs 7500/= 30% on OD. maximum Rs 2000/= Rs 15000/= 35% on OD. maximum Rs 2500/=

Voluntarily deductible amount discount for two wheeler Rs 500/= 5% on OD. maximum Rs 50/= Rs 750/= 10% on OD. maximum Rs 75/= Rs 1000/= 15% on OD. maximum Rs 125/= Rs 1500/= 20% on OD. maximum Rs 200/= Rs 3000/= 25% on OD. maximum Rs 250/=

See these things in action: Ok. Like these, there are so many things in private car insurance. Now the question is how to get all these benefits reflect in your private car insurance policy? For that you go to www.easyinsuranceindia.com where you can underwrite your car insurance policy. If you go to others, first they will underwrite your policy, and then they will ask you to pay the premium. It is totally different at easyinsuranceindia.com.You decide what you want in your policy, and then easyinsuranceindia.com will tell you the premium for that. You decide your vehicle IDV.You choose whether you want Voluntary deductibles. You decide whether you want insure co-passengers? Than pay the premium accordingly. You can play with all these optional covers and discounts. Then you can finally arrive at nominal premium which satisfy your needs. Then you can pay it online using your credit/debit card. Based on your vehicle model they are giving up to 40% discount on your own damage premium. Thus Easyinsuranceindia.com totally redefined your insurance purchase process. You can buy your insurance anytime from anywhere in the country. You will your receive your policy at your doorsteps. So next time to buy car insurance, go to easyinsuranceindia.com,underwrite your policy, pay for it, then get it delivered on your door steps.

Suicide car bomber kills seven in Kohat, Pakistan

Monday, April 19, 2010

Seven people were killed and 26 injured in the city of Kohat in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday after a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb near a police station, police officials said.

“It was a suicide attack, the target was a police station,” Dilawar Khan Bangash, police chief of Kohat, told AFP news agency. He said that all those killed in the attack were civilians. The explosion occurred at the back of the police station.

“Seven people have been killed and 21 were injured in this car suicide attack,” Abdullah Jan, another high ranking police official, told reporters. His statement was made soon after the attack, before the number of injured was revised upward. “These incidents are a reaction to the military operation in the tribal areas,” he claimed. Another police officer confirmed what Jan and Bangash had said, saying that approximately 200 kilograms of explosives were used.

The station was badly affected by the attack, and three rooms of a government-run primary school were destroyed. Seven local shops were also severely damaged.

This attack occurred a day after an earlier suicide bombing killed over 40 people near the same city, and two days after an attack in southern Pakistan killed upwards of ten people.

Getting even with the law: Wikinews interviews New York City’s ‘Jimmy Justice’

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

“What bothers me is watching an officer write someone a summons and then commit the exact same violation with their official vehicle.

A civilian known as ‘Jimmy Justice’ who resides in New York City (NYC), New York, the largest city in the United States, has been videotaping NYC police officers and city workers, breaking the law while on the job.

Since 2007, he claims to have caught “hundreds of officers and other city employees violating the law,” and says he has them all on camera. He has posted his best confrontations with them to the video sharing website YouTube. As a result, Justice states that he has been asked to do a United States television show and Wikinews got an exclusive interview with him. For protection, Justice wished not to be called by his real name in fear of police retaliation.

Last year, Justice videotaped a police officer parking in front of a fire hydrant, but has only recently gained attention on social networking news sites such as Digg and reddit.com. So Wikinews contacted Mr. Justice, known as JimmyJustice4753 on YouTube, for an exclusive interview to find out what caused him to get revenge on the law.

On June 30, 2007, Justice caught officer E. Anderson of the NYPD, traffic division, parking directly in front of a fire hydrant while she went inside a restaurant to take a 15 minute lunch break.

“Do you think there is something wrong with parking a vehicle, blocking a fire hydrant,?” says Justice while following Anderson to her car after her meal.

“Mrs. Anderson I’m talking to you,” says Justice as Anderson ignores him. “You parked your vehicle blocking a fire hydrant. You are not allowed to do that. Somebody else would get a ticket for that. Why are you allowed to do it? You should be ashamed of yourself Mrs. Anderson.”

By this time, the incident has gained the interest of people nearby the scene and passing it. One unidentified woman, who claims to be a retired NYC police officer decides to intervene stating that people “are not supposed to film any police, [or] anybody employed with the police department because of the terrorism.” A short time later the woman walked off camera.

Since 2007 Justice says he has caught “hundreds of law enforcement officers and city officials” on “over 30 hours of video” violating laws from illegal U-turns in business districts to blocking bus stops and fire hydrants. Justice has only uploaded the “most colorful ones to YouTube” and recently, on April 8, 2008, Justice videotaped a NYPD tow truck officer blocking a hydrant while he also ate lunch inside a restaurant. According to NYC law, it is illegal for any vehicle to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant and to park in front of a bus stop. It is also illegal for any person to make a U-turn in a business district. Fines for these violations can cost a driver up to US$115.00 for each violation occurred.

When Wikinews asked Justice why he decided to start filming the violations made by officials he answered, “what bothers me is watching an officer write someone a summons and then commit the exact same violation with their official vehicle. I started making these videos to remind the officers (and complacent civilians) that City employees have to abide by the same laws that they are paid to enforce. I plan on doing this and inspiring others to do this as well as a means of leveling the playing field against discourteous officers.”

“In NYC, the traffic cops are notorious for their draconian indiscretion in handing out summonses to civilians for petty violations. Obviously the laws are not enforced as a matter of public safety, but rather to raise revenue,” added Justice.

Justice makes little effort to get the violations on videotape saying “all I have to do to catch them is open my eyes.”

“The problem with abuse of authority is rampant in New York City. I take my video camera with me on the way to work and on the way to social events and band rehearsals and when I see action it takes me less than 4 seconds to have the camera out and in record mode,” states Justice.

His videos have drawn the attention of media and he has been featured on ABC’s ‘I-caught videos’ and Inside Edition. Justice also states that the popularity of his videos have gotten the attention producers in Hollywood, California and as a result, there are plans for a television show.

Since Justice began getting even with officials and their violations, he states that there has been a positive change in the communities.

“The publicity my videos have received has effected positive change in the community, but we still have a long road ahead of us,” added Justice.

As a result of his videos, at the time the NYPD launched an investigation into the violations, but it is not known if any officers were charged or punished. Justice himself has never been arrested, but has been assaulted.

“I have never been arrested for this yet but they have threatened me with arrest. I have been spit on, cursed at, assaulted, and I had 2 cameras broken already,” added Justice.

Wikinews interviews Brian Moore, Socialist Party USA presidential candidate

Sunday, March 30, 2008

While nearly all cover of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third party candidates. These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.

As a non-partisan news source, Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, who are looking to become the 43rd person elected to serve their nation from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Wikinews’ own Patrick Mannion corresponded with the Socialist Party USA nominee and candidate, Brian Moore via e-mail.

Florida wins BCS National Championship Game over Oklahoma

Friday, January 9, 2009

The Florida Gators defeated the Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 24 to 14 last night’s FedEx BCS National Championship Game to win the Division I title of the National Collegiate Athletic Association‘s American college football league. Florida, ranked Number 1 in the nation, were led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow. “I promised the guys that I would go out and play with all my heart. I was so motivated tonight,” said Tebow. They were matched up against a Number 2 ranked Oklahoma team with a powerful offense, including this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Sam Bradford. The game took place at a sold-out Dolphin Stadium in Miami, as a stadium record 78,468 fans attended the match.

Both team’s defensed dominated each others’ offenses in the first half, forcing a 7 to 7 score when halftime came against a Florida offense that averaged 54 points a game and an Oklahoma offense that averaged 40 points. In total, both team’s defenses had 4 interceptions, 2 for Florida and 2 for Oklahoma. Florida’s defense stopped Oklahoma twice during a goal line stand, stopping them on a fourth-down rush once, and a forced interception out of the hands of Oklahoma wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias by Florida’s Ahmad Black.

On the offensive side of the ball, Florida was led by Tebow. Although throwing 2 interceptions, Tebow completed 18 put of 30 passes for 2 touchdowns, as well as rushed 22 times for over 100 yards. Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford helped the Sooners offense through the air, completing 26 out of 41 passes for 256 yards and 2 passing touchdowns, but also throwing two interceptions. In the fourth quarter, Tebow completed a key 4-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver David Nelson, making the score 24 to 14 and putting the game out of reach for Oklahoma.

Some college fans believe that Florida did not rightly win the national championship, though. Fans of the Utah Utes believed that their undefeated team should have at least earned a spot in the game against Oklahoma or Florida’s one-loss teams. Fans of the USC Trojans and the Texas Longhorns also believed that the teams could have earned a spot in the game, due to their similar records. On the matter, Florida head coach Urban Meyer said “This is one of the best teams in college football history. Let someone else worry about all that. The Gators are No.1.”

On the game, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops commented “In the end, I’ll be glad to try again next year. If that’s the biggest burden I have to bear in my life, I’m a pretty lucky guy.” Tim Tebow, in a post-game interview, said “I was already motivated for a national championship game. But you know, there was some trash talking going on, and it just gets me going during the game.” In a losing effort, Sam Bradford commented “In the first half, we had opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of. In the second half, when we needed to make the plays, we just couldn’t do it.”

Abductors of American journalist Jill Carroll release videotape with demands

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

The abductors of American journalist Jill Carroll released today a silent 20-second video of the abducted journalist on Al-Jazeera television news channel. Along with the video came a statement demanding the United States release all female prisoners in Iraq within 72 hours or they will kill her. Al-Jazeera has not revealed where the video was sent from.

In the video, Carroll is seated in front of a white background, apparently speaking, although the tape contained no sound. She appears pale and tired with long brown hair parted in the middle and pulled back from her face.

Carroll is a 28-year old freelance reporter working for the Christian Science Monitor newspaper in Iraq since October 2003. She was kidnapped on January 7 in one of Baghdad’s most dangerous neighborhoods. Just after leaving the office of a Sunni Arab politician, Adnan al-Dulaimi, her car was ambushed by gunmen who killed her Iraqi translator. The driver got away unharmed as he was pulled from the car by the gunmen who then drove away with the vehicle.

Carroll’s family has issued a statement pleading for mercy. Both Al-Jazeera and the editors of the Boston, Massachusetts-based paper have also called for her safe release.

According to Reporters Sans Frontieres, a Paris, France-based advocacy group, Carroll is the latest of 31 journalists to be abducted in Iraq since the war began in March 2003. Six journalists have been killed by abductors, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
