The Evolution Of Neckties}

Submitted by: Phill Kid

During the year 1880s the British Military changed its bright uniform colors to avoid easy capture by their enemies. The Color of the British Uniform was felt too bright so hat the soldiers became obvious targets even in darkness. The uniform was changed to a more subdued color. But they kept the traditional colors were retained in their neckties and they continued to have the traditional colors and stripes. These ties varied with different regiments and they were included in the new uniforms also.

When the necktie stripe of The Royal Rifle Corps holds the colors of green and scarlet, the Artists Rifles were made with black, gray and red colored neckties. It was green and blue striped neckties that were worn by the Inns of the Court.

Very strict rules held with the persons who may wear more than 200 regimental ties. At that time the great Londons consumer product stores questioned their customers, upon their right to wear one particular tie. This gave rise to the increased demand for exclusively designed neckties and various persons began to collect the neckties and the collection became a passion. The collections of rare ties increased manifolds as the demand increased and the people were ready to pay any cost for rare ties and the rare ties holders sold them for thousands of dollars.

Although its very hot in American south to wear lace or silk cravats the plantation owners of the early 1800s want to show their superiority in the society by wearing wide ribbons tied in bows. During these times the wearing of the wide ribbon bows was taken as a show of status and class

That bows when matched with low collared shirts were known as Plantation Tie and that was the first American Neckwear.

In the western territory mainly at The Mississippi River Boat culture, these ties began to emerge for the first time among the river gamblers. The great writer Mark Twain wanted to show himself with these types of neckties in his paintings. Later on these ties took place in the Riverboat Gamblers uniforms. These ties matched with a fancy white shirt and a light suit. Nowadays the main supporter for these plantation ties is Colonel Sanders of chicken fame who never wanted to show him without these ties.

These Plantation ties were often used by country music singers and square dancers in their costumes. These they felt added to their beauty and fancy of their robes and these ties were even used as identification for a particular group or type of music and dance they were performing.

Australian PM mobbed by anti-Israel protesters

Sunday, July 30, 2006

Australian Prime Minister John Howard was mobbed by protesters in Perth, Western Australia on Saturday, angry at the stance he has taken on the recent conflicts in the Middle East.

Leaving a Liberal party conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the West Australian capital, Howard was mobbed by 200 protestors angry at his support for Israel and the Australian government’s lack of action.

Protestors kicked, punched and threw projectiles at the Prime Minister’s vehicle as police struggled to keep the angry mob under control. One protestor managed to break off the Australian flag attached to the front of Mr Howard’s vehicle.

Protestors, demanding a cease fire in the Middle East, chanted “we want peace” and handed out flyers proclaiming “Cluster bombs are used by Israel to burn our families in Lebanon. Is this fair?”

Police were taken by surprise at the speed by which the protest escalated into violence. “We were surprised by the approach. It was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration,” one officer said. “It had been peaceful up to that point.”

Police arrested two men and charged them with disorderly conduct.

Prior to the protest, Mr Howard told his party conference that two things must happen before peace can be realised in the middle east:

“The first is that there must be conditional acceptance throughout the entire Arab world, without exception, of Israel’s right to exist in peace and stability behind secure and internationally recognised boundaries.”

“The entire Arab world, including Hezbollah, Iran and Syria, must give up forever the idea that the Israelis can be driven from their land.”

“The second condition is that there has to be a equally unconditional acceptance, including on behalf of the Israelis, of the need and the justice of an independent Palestinian state.”

“There has to be a two-state solution.”

NTSB announces safety recommendations to be made in aftermath of Comair Flight 5191 disaster

Saturday, June 9, 2007

The American National Transportation Safety Board has announced that it will make new airline safety recommendations. This comes a result of its investigation into the Comair Flight 5191 disaster, in which a Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) CRJ-100ER crashed whilst attempting take-off from the wrong runway at Blue Grass Airport, Lexington, killing 49 people and leaving just one survivor. The plane was unable to take off because that runway was too short.

The NTSB has now announced that, on July 26, the date on which the NTSB is to determine the probable cause of the accident, they will issue safety recommendations regarding methods of preventing a recurrence of the disaster.

One of the recommendations will concern developing and implementing a cockpit-based system that will inform pilots when they are in the wrong location. Another will involve rescheduling the workloads of Air Traffic Controllers to ensure they receive more sleep, a request they had previously made in April.

Regarding location warning systems, the FAA has pointed out that they have been working on methods of preventing runway incursions (in which a person, ground vehicle or another aircraft is on the runway when or where it should not be), to which the National Transportation Safety Board chairman Mark Rosenker responded “The FAA is doing a great job testing these systems. The question we have is, when will you finally implement that technology?” FAA Associate Administrator Margaret Gilligan responded by saying that they were currently looking at just such a system, adding “We do have airlines that have committed to put that technology on the flight deck once it’s approved”. The system referred to involves runway signal lights and is currently being tested at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

The NTSB will also look at runway and taxiway markings and the ways they can confuse pilots, as this issue has been identified as a contributing factor in the accident. Rosenker said the NTSB was “very interested” in this area. 140 airports have unclear or confusing markings in the US, but it is not certain if Blue Grass Airport is one of them. However, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) made a submission to the NTSB stating that they had found that the markings at Blue Grass Airport did not match those on the charts the pilots were using. ALPA went on to recommend greater standardisation of airport runway markings.

Blue Grass Airport responded yesterday by saying that there was nothing wrong with their runway markings, with spokesman Brian Ellestad saying “We have had numerous inspections before and after (the Comair crash) and have had no issues… FAA reiterates that we meet all requirements for signage, markings, lighting, runways and taxiways.”

The First Wrist Watches (Part 4 Of 5)}

The First Wrist Watches (Part 4 of 5)

by

Thomas Young

As with many fashion trends in times gone by, the wrist watch was first made fashionable by royalty — specifically Queen Elizabeth I who was given one in the late 1500s. It was an adaptation of the pocket watch made more feminine and worn as an adornment accessory.

The very first widely worn wristwatches were designed exclusively for women and called wristlets. Men of the late 19th century and early 20th century still kept track of time using a pocket watch. They considered the wristlet a fashion trend that would, like all others, come and go; and the wristwatch would at that time never be considered by men as anything but a feminine bobble for women.

The wristwatch as a useful way to conveniently keep time for men actually started out as a wartime necessity. The British army in their fight against South Africa in the Boar War in the early 1900s strapped pocket watches to their wrist so that they could hold their weapons and still synchronize maneuvers with other troops. The first wristwatches for men were promoted to the military for men going into active service. Many of these influential men found the convenience of not fishing in a pocket for their watch indispensable even after returning from the field.

Changes in watchbands also added to the popularity of the wristwatch for both men and women. The flexible band pieces that attached to the open-faced watch made it easy to fasten a leather strap, which kept the watch securely, attached to the wrist. Now wristwatches were standard military issue for the allied troops of World War I.

In 1915, The Rolex Watch Company, formerly known as Wilsdorf & Davis, was founded. Hans Wilsdorf liked the idea of a wristwatch for both men and women and worked to improve the accuracy. Rolex was recognized as a leader in this research and received the first wristwatch Chronometer award given out by the School of Horology in Bienne.

In the mid-1920s, following the war, men started to associate wristwatches with the brave heroes who fought and no longer viewed them as only for women. Rolex seized upon this new image and continued through the 1950s to market watches specifically to men. Professional, masculine-style watches were developed to be worn by men in various fields of work.

The development of new technology capable of tracking time and performing the other functions of a cell phone or planner may lead to a time when the watch will be less of an important way to keep time and more of fashion accessory or status symbol. But, lets face it, if anyone ever asks you if you know the time, your first instinct is to raise your wrist, whether or not you remembered to put on your watch!

Wail of sirens marks Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel

Thursday, May 1, 2008

A 2-minute siren wail which began in Israel at 10 a.m. Thursday marked the beginning of Yom HaShoah, the country’s Holocaust Remembrance Day. Israelis across the nation paused their daily activities for a moment of silence in memory of the six million Jews murdered by Nazis in the Holocaust during World War II. Drivers turned off their vehicles and stood at attention in the middle of the road, and pedestrians stopped and bowed their heads. Names of victims were read aloud in the Knesset, the legislature of Israel.

Individuals laid wreaths at a memorial for the Warsaw Ghetto uprising at Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust. National ceremonies began at Yad Vashem on Wednesday evening, with the lighting of a flame by a Holocaust survivor. In all six torches were lit, in memory of the six million Jews who died during the Holocaust. Approximately 270,000 survivors of the Holocaust live in Israel today, 80,000 of whom survived Nazi death camps.

Entertainment venues, theaters, and movie cinemas closed shop at sundown Wednesday. Television stations and radio programming focused on memorial of the Holocaust. Memorial events end at sunset on Thursday, and will be followed one week later by the 60th anniversary of the declaration of independence of Israel in 1948, known as Yom Ha’atzmaut.

A leader who plans mass destruction, together with weapons of mass destruction. What would have been left of our world?

Shimon Peres, Israel’s President, spoke at Yad Vashem, and compared the potential danger which Israel says is posed by Iran’s nuclear program, to that faced by Jews during the Holocaust. “In history, it is forbidden to be late,” said Peres, saying that the world reacted too late to Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. “My heart shudders when I recall that there was a possibility that Hitler could acquire nuclear weapons. A leader who plans mass destruction, together with weapons of mass destruction. What would have been left of our world?” asked Peres. Aides later stated that Peres was referring to Iran.

Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also referred to Iran in his remarks at Yad Vashem. “You wish to deny the right of existence of the Jewish state, and you are wrong to believe that the Jewish state was created only due to the Holocaust. The Holocaust only underscored the necessity of its creation and the horrible price that the Jewish people had to pay for the lack of existence of a state that can shelter them,” said Olmert. Other speakers at Yad Vashem emphasized the importance of the Israel Defense Forces, Israel’s military forces, to prevent tragedies such as the Holocaust in the future.

We have learned our lesson and we take very seriously the threats of state leaders who call for the destruction of Israel.

Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi, military chief of staff of Israel, led an annual march of Jewish youths, Poles and survivors at Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, in a memorial ceremony called The March of the Living. Auschwitz-Birkenau operated as a Nazi death camp during the Holocaust. 12,000 people gathered from 52 countries to take part in the memorial ceremony. The largest march took place in 2005, and former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon joined with 20,000 people. “… in these days, as we celebrate 60 years of independence, the fact that an independent Jewish state exists is not something to be taken for granted. Even today, we hear the horrible sounds of those who call for the destruction of the state of Israel. Even today we are forced to continue and fight for our right to have a national home in a safe place for the Jewish people in their own land. We have learned our lesson and we take very seriously the threats of state leaders who call for the destruction of Israel,” said Ashkenazi.

Hamas television Thursday suggested that the Holocaust was organized by Jews to wipe out the disabled among their own people to prepare for the creation of a Jewish state. “The Israeli Holocaust – the whole thing was a joke, and part of the perfect show that (Zionist leader and future Israeli prime minister) Ben Gurion put on,” said head of the Palestinian Centre for Strategic Research Amin Dabur, according to Jerusalem-based Palestinian Media Watch. Dabur said that the “young energetic and able” went to Israel, and that those who were disabled were sent “so there would be a Holocaust”.

Though Iran has said that its nuclear program is peaceful in nature, the United States, Israel, and other countries believe it is attempting to construct nuclear weapons. In speeches Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that the Jewish state should be destroyed. Ahmadinejad has called the Holocaust “a myth”. Tehran hosted a revisionist Holocaust conference in 2006, which provoked international criticism. Tel Aviv University published a study on Monday saying that acts of anti-Semitism in 2007 increased by about seven percent over 2006.

Body Kits The Magic Of Change}

Body kits the magic of change

by

ilovebodykits

Change is part of our daily lives. Sometimes we are not happy with all the changes happening around us and at other times we don’t like the way things are and want things to change. Though most of the changes occurring around us are not within our direct control there are some changes that we can initiate on our own.

So what are the changes that we would like to see happen around us? Usually these changes are associated with a positive development such as a higher income level or a new friendship or a breakthrough in our work. But waiting for positive things to happen can mean one has to wait for a long time and be very patient. On the other hand one can bring some positive changes into our lives and these changes can potentially cause more positive things to happen.

For example if you are bored of driving the same old car day in and day out you can consider adding car body kits to the car. The body kits will give the car a new look and personality. Your car will have an enhanced visual appeal and that will rub off on how you feel about yourself as well. Making such a change does not cost much and gets you out of the rut of a hum drum existence.

Options of three body styles of the pickup truck are available in the market to cater to varied requirements. You can further add to available options while buying and installing body kits. Body kits made of different materials are obtainable in a number of designs. You will enjoy the process of browsing through the various options of body kits available and choosing those that match your style and taste.

Even a pickup truck can have customized body kits. There is nothing exceptional about a pickup truck being made to look attractive by a wise choice of body kits. It is not the privilege of only passenger cars to look attractive. A decorated pickup truck will attract more clients, which will mean more business.

A changed look of the car will immediately be noticed by your friends and colleagues. And they will have the opportunity to know of your abilities to do up the look of the car to match your taste and style. For a while it will be a conversation piece as people discuss what made you make the change and how you went about getting the body kits installed. Things will no longer be the same.

And as one things leads to another it is entirely possible there will be a knock on effect and positive things will happen. Of course one cannot claim that body kits will definitely make your life much happier and cause positive things to start happening to you. But they will be a change for the better in themselves. And whenever one wants to make an improvement one mostly does it, a step at a time. Installing body kits is one such step. And doing up your car will add some excitement to your life. French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent dead at 71

Sunday, June 1, 2008

Yves Saint-Laurent, one of the major fashion designers of the 20th century, died Sunday evening of cancer at the age of 71, after four decades at the top of his profession. Friends say he died while at his home in Paris, France.

Saint-Laurent was born Yves Henri Donat Dave Mathieu-Saint-Laurent on August 1, 1936 in Oran, Algeria. Saint-Laurent was famous for designing women’s clothing and at age 21 he became the head designer for the company House of Dior. He was hired to take the place of the late Christian Dior, who died in 1957.

He retired from his job there and ultimately left the fashion industry in 2002, but not before starting his own clothing line and shop with Pierre Berge in 1962. It was once rumored that woman who wore his newly designed pantsuits were not allowed to eat at restaurants or stay in hotels in New York City and London, England.

“Fashion was not only supposed to make women beautiful, but to reassure them, to give them confidence, to allow them to come to terms with themselves,” Saint-Laurent once said.

Saint-Laurent not only fought the effects of cancer, but through the years dealt with drug use and depression.

“I’ve known fear and terrible solitude. Tranquilizers and drugs, those phony friends. The prison of depression and hospitals. I’ve emerged from all this, dazzled but sober,” stated Saint-Laurent.

Tsunami alert lifted for Japan and Russia

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

The tsunami alert issued for certain areas of Russia and Japan after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the north coast of Japan have been lifted. While the tsunami alert has been lifted, Japan’s Meteorological Agency’s web site is still showing watches in affect for most of the eastern Pacific coast of Hokkaido.

A small 40cm (15.7 inches) wave did wash up in some areas of the eastern coast of Japan, but this was nowhere near the 200cm (6.5 feet) wave that had been feared.
