North Sea oil spill is Norway’s second worst

Thursday, December 13, 2007

On Wednesday at 12:40 p.m. CET (UTC+1), Norwegian authorities were alerted to an oil spill in the Statfjord oil field. The spill originated from the oil platform “Statfjord A”, one of three platforms in the field, operated by StatoilHydro.

Kristin Hoffmann of Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (Petroleumtilsynet) told Dagens Nyheter: “This is the second largest in Norwegian history.” The amount of oil released into the sea is believed to be at least 3840 cubic metres, 25,000 barrels, or approximately 4,000 metric tons. This amount would rank the spill low on the list of oil spills.

“It is a significant amount and we are taking it seriously,” said Vegar Stokset, a spokesman for StatoilHydro, though he said the spill was “very far from land.”

The accident occurred in rough seas while tanker Navion Britannia was loading oil from a storage buoy, StatoilHydro said. Christian Sletner of the Norwegian Coastal Administration said, “StatoilHydro has a good preparedness plan, and a satisfactory system for handling this.” He added, “StatoilHydro is responsible for cleaning up. This is the ‘polluter pays’ principle.”

“The amount of damage could range from completely marginal to relatively large if substantial amounts reach land,” Sletner said. “The chances of it reaching land, at the moment, seem to be relatively small.”

No one was injured at the time of the accident and the platform will continue work as usual Thursday, said StatiolHydro Information Director Kai Nielsen. In a press release, StatiolHydro announced that four vessels are on their way to begin the clean-up, though they will have to wait for calmer seas to begin work.

Petroleum Safety Authority Norway said in a press release that it is demobilizing disaster teams and beginning to prepare for its investigation of the incident. It will also closely follow StatoilHydro’s clean-up.

Statfjord is 200 km (124 miles) off the coast of Norway, located to the east of Bergen. It is an oil and gas field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, though approximately 15% of it is in the United Kingdom’s waters. At peak production, it produces over 700,000 barrels of oil per day. The field is one of the largest known under-sea oil fields in the world.

New faces emerge as veteran politicians step down in Hong Kong legislative election

Friday, September 9, 2016

The Hong Kong legislative election was held on Sunday, with a record-breaking turnout of around 2 million voters and turnout rate of 58%. The results show the anti-establishment camp successfully maintained a majority in the geographical constituencies’ seats thus veto power to any members’ bills, and also a minority larger than a third to veto any bills featuring major political reforms. Young and new faces emerged in the new council members, as veteran politicians stepped down in both the anti-establishment and pro-Beijing camps.

In the New Territories West geographical constituency, nonpartisan pan-democrat Eddie Chu was elected with 84,121 votes, the most given to any list in the geographical constituencies. Other anti-establishment candidates elected in this district were localist camp’s Cheng Chung-tai of Civic Passion, pan-democracy camp’s Kwok Ka-ki and Andrew Wan of respectively Civic Party and the Democratic Party. The pro-Beijing camp candidates elected were New People Party’s Michael Tien, DAB’s Ben Chan and Leung Che-cheung, FTU’s Alice Mak and pro-establishment nonpartisan Junius Ho. Two pan-democratic veteran politicians Lee Cheuk-yan of the Labour Party and Frederick Fung of ADPL were defeated in this constituency, with Junius Ho defeating Lee Cheuk-yan by around five thousand votes.

In the New Territories East geographical constituency, pan-democracy camp councillors Alvin Yeung from the Civic Party, Fernando Cheung of the Labour Party, Raymond Chan of People Power, and Leung Kwok-hung of LSD were successfully elected. Pan-democrat Lam Cheuk-ting from the Democratic Party and localist group Youngspiration’s Baggio Leung were successfully elected newcomers. For the Pro-Beijing camp, Elizabeth Quat of DAB was elected with 58,825 votes, the highest in the constituency. Other pro-Beijing candidates elected in this constituency were Gary Chan of DAB and Eunice Yung of New People’s Party. Pan-democrat Gary Fan of the Neo Democrats failed to get re-elected in this constituency, and resigned from his leadership in his party due to its election defeat.

In the Hong Kong Island geographical constituency, pro-Beijing New People Party’s Regina Ip was re-elected with 60,760 votes. Other pro-Beijing elected were FTU’s Kwok Wai-keung and DAB’s Horace Cheung. Demosisto’s Nathan Law earned a surprise victory as second place in the constituency with 50,818 votes, and becomes the youngest Legislative Council member in Hong Kong’s history. The other two anti-establishment camp elects were Hui Chi-fung from the Democratic Party and Tanya Chan of the Civic Party, both considered to be in the pan-democracy camp. Pan-democrat veteran Cyd Ho from the Labour Party lost her seat in this constituency.

In the Kowloon West geographical constituency, pro-Beijing councillors Ann Chiang of DAB and Priscilla Leung of BPA were successfully re-elected, as well as pan-democratic councillors Claudia Mo of the Civic Party and Wong Pik-wan of the Democratic Party. The rest of the candidates elected in this constituency were young and relatively new activists from the localist camp, Lau Siu-lai and Youngspiration’s Yau Wai-ching. Yau Wai-ching defeated another localist camp candidate, veteran politician Raymond Wong of the Proletariat Political Institute, by 424 votes.

In the Kowloon East geographical constituency, pro-Beijing district councillor Wilson Or was elected with 51,516 votes, the highest in this constituency. Nonpartisan Paul Tse and Wong Kwok-kin of the FTU were successfully re-elected. Pan-democracy camp councillor Wu Chi-wai of the Democratic Party was elected. Civic Party’s Jeremy Tam was elected for the first time. Localist group Civic Passion’s Wong Yeung-tat was defeated in this district, and resigned his leadership in Civic Passion.

In the District Council (Second) functional constituency, commonly know as “Super District Council” seats, pan-democracy camp’s Kwong Chun-yu of the Democratic Party received 491,667 votes, the highest in this constituency. Other pan-democrats elected were Leung Yiu-chung of NWSC and James To of the Democratic Party. Pro-Beijing DAB’s Starry Lee and Holden Chow were successfully elected in this constituency, while pro-Beijing veteran politician Wong Kwok-hing of FTU was defeated by 10,694 votes by James To.

In traditional functional constituencies, the pan-democracy camp gained a seat from the pro-Beijing camp. Shiu Ka-chun of the Social Welfare constituency defeated their opponents, hence the pan-democrats’ seats in the functional constituencies increased from 9 to 10. Also, an independent who does not claim to belong to either camp, Edward Yiu of the Architectural, Surveying, Planning and Landscape constituency, defeated his opponents and was elected.

The turnout of this election was the highest in the history of Legislative Council elections, with around 2 million voters voted and a turnout rate of 58%. At a polling station in Taikoo of the Hong Kong Island constituency, after the polls closed at 22:30, with the long queues outside the station the last ballot there was cast at 02:30 the next day, four hours after the last person was allowed to join the queue. The previous general legislative election in Hong Kong was before the 2014 protests. The election elects 70 members of the Legislative Council.

Council of Europe report challenges teaching of Creationism

Monday, June 18, 2007

The spread of Creationist doctrines within the education systems of Council of Europe member states “could become a threat to human rights”, according to a report which will be discussed and voted on by the Council of Europe on 26th June.

Investigation of the creationists’ growing influence shows that the arguments between creationism and evolution go well beyond intellectual debate. If we are not careful, the human rights (the values that are the very essence of the Council of Europe) will be under direct threat from creationist fundamentalists.

The text written by the Committee on Culture, Science and Education of the Council, firmly challenges the belief in a creator and a world which was created, to the exclusion of accepted theories of evolution. Although Creationist doctrines were for a long time an American phenomenon and not too widespread within the European countries, the report suggests that they are tending to spread to Council of Europe member states.

According to the document, Creationism – fundamentalist doctrine of the origin of the world based on the Bible – is not based on facts and does not rely on any scientific grounds.

The report notes that children currently study predominantly evolutionary theories with a scientific basis, and suggests that there is a consequential risk of introducing confusion for them when presented with alternatives based on “convictions, beliefs and ideals” with no scientific basis.

The Parliamentary Assembly urges member states and their education authorities, inter alia, to “firmly oppose the presenting of creationism as a scientific discipline on an equal footing with the theory of evolution by natural selection and in general resist presentation of creationist doctrines in any discipline other than religion”.

Interpol arrest Karachi fire suspect in Bangkok

Sunday, December 4, 2016

Interpol on Friday evening arrested Abdul ‘Bhola’ Rehman in Bangkok, Thailand. Rehman, 46, is accused of starting a 2012 garment factory fire in Karachi, Pakistan that killed over 250.

Initially thought to be accidental, the fire is now believed to have been set deliberately by an extortion group targeting the factory’s owners. Rehman is accused of receiving an order to start the fire. He is expected to be extradited to Pakistan where he is facing charges under terrorism legislation.

The Pakistani Interior Ministry was ordered by a court to arrest Rehman and another suspect, Hammad Siddiqui, with assistance from Interpol. A third accused, Zubair alias Lala, is detained in Pakistan. Around a dozen further suspects are under investigation.

The Ali Enterprises factory fire in Karachi’s Baldia Town area was among the worst industrial disasters in Pakistan. A judicial enquiry found insufficient emergency exits, insufficient safety training, overcrowding due to bulky equipment, and insufficient regulatory oversight all contributed. German firm KIK, the facility’s main customer, paid compensation to victims.

Once facing now-abandoned murder charges, the factory’s owners are now being treated as witnesses. Papers lodged before Sindh High Court in February last year suggested an extortion plot. A reinvestigation commenced the following month, and earlier this year police confirmed they too believed an extortion gang to be responsible.

Rehman was arrested at the Royal Garden Home Hotel, where he was staying alone. He is alleged by some reporters to have connections with the Pakistani Pak Sarzameen Party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement, something both organisations deny. He is also alleged to have worked for Karachi’s local government.

Rehman’s wife said he was innocent.

How Spoof News Satirists The Daily Squib Changed The Course Of History}

How Spoof News Satirists the Daily Squib Changed the Course of History

During the U.S. election Democratic primaries nomination fight of 2008, polls indicated that Hillary Clinton had finally overtaken Barack Obama and seemed poised to win a shot at the White House as the first ever female president of the United States. She had rallied the Democratic party base. She had electrified the American people. She also had her husband, Bill, firmly behind her waving a banner and she had firmly established herself in the consciousness of her countrymen as the surefire presidential choice that would make history.

Then, something truly astonishing occurred, the Daily Squib, a maverick British satirical outsider published an outlandish piece of spoof news that shook the heart of America. The Daily Squib headline ‘Ku Klux Klan Endorses Obama’ went ballistic, the slogan even turning up at election rallies with Obama telling people to ‘quieten down already’. The tag line for the Daily Squib article was a perfectly photoshopped banner held by Klan members with the slogan ‘KKK Anything better than Hillary. Vote Obama’. Who were these spoof news upstarts from the U.K.? The story went viral and soon became the No1 topic of conversation in America. Almost overnight, Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers began to drop precipitously as the arrayed forces of electronically transmitted satire propelled Obama over the shoulders of Hillary Clinton’s sure thing. Before you knew it, Clinton was superseded by Obama who went on to became the first ever African president. For the first time in American history, a presidential candidate had seen all her hopes and dreams undone by the sheer emotive power of naked, unbridled satire.

No one can doubt that 2008 was a truly powerful time for satire and the viral power of the internet was its vociferous piston driving home a message of hope, clarity and racial harmony. How things were to change thereafter.

The unbridled success of the Daily Squib soon after encouraged many other satire/spoof news sites to pop up all over the internet trying to capitalise on the satirical revolution it had engendered.

Naturally, with the flood of every Joe and their dog starting a spoof news website, this in turn muddied the waters and managed to saturate the already crowded internet, consigning it to a plethora of websites simply vying for traffic and advertising revenue through populist banal headlines with not much satire involved.

Through the mire, the Daily Squib managed to inflict rational thought on more serious subjects like religion, taking swipes at the fascistic behaviour of America’s TSA, and level some horrific satirical warnings of what may come in the future causing mass hysteria in the Middle East, it even managed to encouraged Paris Hilton to join Islam.

Unlike many other publications, the Daily Squib has never advertised, is not funded by any corporation or organisation, is not affiliated to any political party or religion, and has very limited resources despite its long list of spoof contact addresses. It therefore languishes in the outer reaches of the corporate pool, a satirical maverick with a cult following and no monetary support. If there ever was a spoof news site that followed the tenets of Juvenal, and true satire then the Daily Squib wins its twisted crown of digital thorns.

Iraqi insurgents intercepted drone feeds using widely available software

Saturday, December 19, 2009

United States defense officials acknowledged that Iraqi insurgents successfully intercepted live video feeds from U.S. MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicles with widely available software. The story broke on Thursday in the Wall Street Journal with a defense official, anonymously, informing them it is an old problem, which has already been fixed.

The Journal says U.S. military personnel in Iraq discovered the problem late last year when they seized a Shi’ite militant’s laptop containing drone video feeds.

Senior defense and intelligence officials say insurgents were able to take advantage of an unprotected communications link in the systems of the remotely-piloted aircraft. The insurgents used software that is available online and costs about $26.

While U.S. defense officials say the issue has been fixed, the Journal quoted senior intelligence officials as saying it was not yet clear if the problem had been completely resolved.

It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.

U.S. officials say there is no evidence that militants had been able to take control of the drones. But the intercepted video feeds could show where the planes are operating.

The Journal also reported that U.S. drone feeds have also been intercepted in Afghanistan.

Officials say the U.S. government has known about a flaw in the drone communication system since the NATO intervention in Bosnia in the 1990s. At the time, the military assumed local adversaries would not know how to exploit it.

The report says fighters in Iraq used software programs such as one called “SkyGrabber” from the Russian company SkySoftware, which is designed to intercept data transmitted by satellite Internet.

The Journal quoted one of the program’s developers, Andrew Solonikov, as saying it was designed to download legal content — such as music and video — and that it was never intended to intercept military data. Solonikov said in a email to the paper, “It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.”

Emergency spacewalks planned to fix International Space Station

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

NASA is scrambling to solidify plans to fix the broken down cooling systems on the International Space Station during two spacewalks, currently planned for Friday and Monday. The systems broke down late Saturday July 31, triggering alarms that woke the six astronauts (three Russian and three American) currently onboard the station. NASA’s flight controller said the astronauts are not in any danger, but that science experiments are on hold until the problem can be fixed.

The first spacewalk is set to begin Friday at 6:55 a.m. EDT, NASA officials said. The two planned spacewalks will be conducted by astronauts Douglas Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson. They will replace an ammonia pump module, which shut down Saturday. The pump’s failure prompted the astronauts to shut down several other systems as well. The spare pump had been delivered to the station in July 2006, during STS-121.

Normally, major repair spacewalks take weeks of preparation. An unrelated spacewalk had already been planned for this Thursday, which would have been conducted by Wheelock and Dyson, so the space suits and equipment are ready to go. NASA decided late Monday evening that the spacewalk would be postponed to Friday to allow for more preparation.

In October 2010 the space station is expected to break the record for the longest continuously inhabited space station, a record currently held by Mir.

Faust seeks Murphy disqualification in PA Congressional primary

Friday, March 31, 2006

Jane Faust, former Republican committeewoman once convicted of forging signatures, was a plaintiff yesterday in Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court (state court). Her lawyer, Larry Otter, argued that Patrick Murphy should be thrown off the ballot for the Democratic primary election in the eighth congressional district of Pennsylvania. The eighth district is primarily located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Otter argued that during the period of election petition signature collection, Murphy had signed his name as the circulator on two petition sheets, but was not present for each signature that was signed on those sheets, and thereby breaking Pennsylvania state law. Pennsylvania law states that whoever signs a petition sheet as a circulator must be present for each signature and see each signature placed on the sheet.

Murphy admitted that he was not at the sheet for every signature, and he agreed that the 96 signatures on those two sheets should be invalidated. He also stated that he was unaware of that particular election statute. Otter argued that the candidacy should be thrown out because when Murphy presented his signatures he was required to sign an affidavit stating he would “not knowingly violate any election law.” It was Otter’s contention to Judge Robert Simpson, Jr., that it is unbelievable that Murphy would not know the law, as Murphy is a lawyer.

“Mr. Murphy is a member of the bar of this court. He can’t say he doesn’t know what the law was. He’s been campaigning over a year,” Otter said. He then continued, arguing that since Murphy knowingly falsified his name on those two circulation petitions, he also failed to fulfill his candidate affidavit, which according to state law is a criminal offense.

The campaign manager for the Murphy campaign, Josh Nanberg, said, “Under Otter’s argument, any candidate who has a meeting and puts a clipboard at the front table and … goes to the bathroom should be thrown out. That’s ridiculous.”

Wax Hitler will return to museum after repairs

Monday, July 7, 2008

Hitler’s wax model is to return to the Madame Tussauds museum in Berlin, Germany after getting its head ripped off by a 41-year old man who was arrested but subsequently released.

At the grand opening of the museum, the man, currently only known as Frank L., pushed aside two officers who were protecting the exhibit. Yelling “No more war!”, he proceeded to rip off the wax sculpture’s head.

The man was arrested but later released pending investigation. He told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag he was angry about the exhibit. It has been reported that he had committed the act to win a bet started by his friends at a bar.

The waxwork was criticized around Germany where, generally, Nazi memorabilia or symbols are banned. Critics have argued that it is inappropriate to display a person who started a world war, but the museum has noted that Hitler was an important figure in German history.

The museum has announced its intentions to reinstate the 200,000 (£160,000) model after repairs, which could take weeks.

Skateboard Risers Relief From The Wheel Bites!}

Submitted by: Peter Rivers

Skateboarding is a trend catching up with all the young guys and girls. Beginners love practicing this sport at skate parks nearby their houses. They love training under experts to cover basic and new tricks. A great demand for good quality for skateboards has given rise to skateboard risers. Skateboard risers are a small part of skateboards which aide in a more comfortable and smooth ride. One should constantly check their risers to see if they are still in working condition worn out risers must be replaced immediately in order to ensure the skateboarders safety and well being.

Skateboard risers are the flat protection that is mounted between the truck and the deck of your skateboard. You can find risers of different shapes, sizes, thickness and colors to match any skateboard deck. The main function of the riser is to help provide durability to your skateboard deck by reducing the stress it undergoes from the weight of the trucks. With the help of risers you could thwart a wheel bite which often causes your wheels to stop suddenly. Rough use and lots of weight pressure often results in the wheel touching the deck and causing a full stop to your skateboard. There are a variety of risers easily available in the market. You can search online at skateboarding stores for the kind of risers you are looking for. You can effortlessly find a matching riser for a complete match. If you have a deck which is blue in color, you can avail of a Pig Piles 1/8 Hard Risers Blue Single Set for a proper match and durability.

Professional skaters know exactly which skateboard risers suit their individual style. However there are many riders who do not like to use risers as they increase the height of their skateboard. Professional skaters believe it is tough to perform higher level tricks on taller skateboards. For experts using a Dooks 1/4 Risers Single Set could make a huge difference in their riding style. Beginners training with skateboards having skateboard risers attached to it get used to its feel and prefer to use a riser for preventing wheel bites and to assist in absorbing shock. Risers are available in pairs, one for each pair of wheels. Many have this wrong notion about risers that any size would fit all skateboards which is completely a wrong notion. One needs to choose a riser as per his wheel size and the height of the trucks. For riders using a skateboard having 64mm wheels, a 1/4 riser would be best for him. For a skateboard having 58mm wheel size a Habitat Pod 1/8 Risers Single Set would help the rider in a smooth and comfortable ride. If a rider wants to enhance his flexibility and turning ability he should opt for an angled riser pad. To know more about which riser will suit your style and skateboard, log on to various websites giving fruitful advice on this. Risers help you improve your overall performances giving you relief from wheel bites and shocks!
