Firing of Michael Jackson spokeswoman disputed

Saturday, June 11, 2005

Wrangling between musician Michael Jackson‘s legal and public relation teams may have yielded its first casualty. Jackson’s official website, www.mjjsource.com, reports that Jackson’s MJJ Productions has terminated spokeswoman Raymone Bain and public relations firm Davis, Bain, and Associates. On Wednesday, Bain held a press conference amidst a court-issued gag order which she implied was sanctioned by the Jackson legal team. The same day, Jackson’s attorney Thomas Mesereau, Jr. released a court-approved terse message: “I have not authorized anyone to speak or hold any press conferences on behalf of Michael Jackson or his family.”

Despite the www.mjjsource.com announcement, late Friday the Associated Press quotes Bain responding, “I have not been fired by Michael Jackson.” Bain says she works directly for Jackson himself, not MJJ Productions.

The controversy occurs as Michael Jackson awaits a verdict on charges that he molested a teenage boy in 2003. On Friday, the jury completed its sixth day of deliberations. The twelve jurors will reconvene on Monday.

Plan, which was founded 35 years ago, is published on a monthly basis and has a circulation of 3,500. German Holocaust memorial dedicated

Tuesday, May 10, 2005

A new $35m Holocaust memorial in Germany officially called the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe was dedicated during a ceremony Tuesday. The memorial commemorates the suffering the millions of European Jews who were held in concentration camps by the Nazi regime. The dedication comes just a day after the 60th anniversary of the Allied Victory in World War II.

U.S. architect Peter Eisenman designed the new memorial, which is contained in one block square very close to the parliament and the new US embassy in the heart of Berlin, Germany. The memorial consists of over 2,700 gray concrete blocks representing the helplessness of the Holocaust victims. The blocks are covered with an anti-graffiti substance which was made by the same company that produced the Zyklon B poison used in the genocide. They are all of different shapes and sizes, and are set on a sloping hillside, designed to produce an uneasy, confusing atmosphere.

The memorial has met with criticism. Many have pointed out that the memorial is only for the Jews who died, and does not represent the millions of gypsies, homosexuals and mentally-handicapped people who were also murdered. It has also been said that while the memorial commerates those who died, it does not ask any questions about why the atrocity happened. However, there are plans for memorials commemorating other victims of the Nazi regime. Under the abstract memorial there is a place which informs visitors about Holocaust.

The ceremony, which Chancellor Gerhard Schröder attended, included prayer led by a Jewish rabbi and speeches reflecting on the Holocaust given by a survivor and leaders of the Jewish community in Germany.

You Can Get Paid To Take Surveys But Can You Really Make Money At It?

By Jorge Chavez

With all of the paid survey activity on the Internet, it is easy to get paid to take surveys. More than 700 survey makers offer paid online surveys in the U.S. alone. Almost all of these are looking for more survey participants. Internationally you can get paid to take surveys made by over 3,000 different survey makers.

The challenge is not just to get paid to take surveys – that’s easy. The challenge is to find the legitimate paid surveys that pay well, avoid the time-wasters that don’t, and make money at it.

80% of the money is made through 20% of the survey makers and their surveys. From the point of view of those who want to really get paid to take surveys and make money in doing so, only about 1 in every 5 survey makers is truly worth dealing with. Another 40% are marginal, and about 40% are time wasters, to be avoided.

The key to making money with online paid surveys is in the list of survey makers that you sign up with as a prospective survey taker. You might think that it would be easy to get such a list, but it’s not. The survey makers that pay poorly or not at all are constantly losing participants and must recruit new ones.

They pay recruiting fees to anyone who can bring them “fresh meat”, new participants that don’t yet know the ropes. These high recruiting fees mean that anytime you go to look for survey makers on the Net, you will be inundated by offers for “free lists” and ads recruiting survey participants.

Almost all of the offers and ads you will see will be recruiting for the survey makers that don’t pay or don’t pay well. They are trying to fill recent vacancies left by participants who were expecting to get paid to take online surveys, were not paid, were disappointed, and quit.

You generally won’t find good lists where the survey makers are paying the list purveyors to recruit you.

But you can find a good list, one that will help you really get paid to take surveys, with one of those paid survey membership sites that maintain lists for their members. For a smallish membership fee they will share their list with you. You pay, so the guide will take you where YOU want to go.

When choosing your paid survey membership site, look for two things: 1. A very strong money-back guarantee, backed up by a financial company or bank. 2. A low refund rate under that guarantee. The guarantee means that the site stands behind its service; you like their service or it costs you nothing.

The low refund rate means that the current members like the service there and feel that they got full value for their small investment. You will want to join a group like that.

A high refund rate means many unhappy clients demanding their money back. This is a group you will want to avoid becoming part of.

There are sources of information on paid online surveys that can help you to really get paid to take surveys. You can start with a good, objective, paid survey review site like that cited below, for more explanation and information.

Fila Vintage Clothing Continues To Excel In Sportswear World

By Jonny George

Sportswear brands and models come and go over the years as new styles are introduced frequently. And while new clothing items and styles catch the eye of consumers every year, it is the classics and vintage gear that seems to stick around regardless of what is newly released. One example of this is Fila vintage clothing, which has only excelled over the years.

As with any other sportswear company you would find, Fila has put out a number of different clothing items, styles and options for people to choose from. Anything from polo’s to training jackets to shorts can be found within this company, and there is a vast amount of to consider for your wardrobe.

Perhaps the most recognizable Fila vintage clothing item as been the tracksuit tops. This is something countless tennis athletes and athletes from other sports have worn over the years. It is a lightweight, comfortable, and rather stylish piece of apparel that can be worn with anything. Whether you are wearing it to the gym or out on the town, it is the perfect option for all sorts of events.

Fila clothing seemed to be the brand to wear in the 80s with athletes, move stars, and entertainers of all kinds enjoying the sportswear company’s finest attire. While the brand did begin to fade in the 90s as fashion had moved on, it began to creep back up in the late 90s with people beginning to wear vintage sportswear. The look only continued into the 2000’s as Fila vintage clothing has blossomed into an incredible industry.

The little red and blue ‘F’ has become an iconic figure over time with countless tops, bottoms, hats, bags, shoes and more sporting the symbol. And with Fila vintage clothing now being found worldwide as a fashion style of its own, it is easier than ever to find the original classic design tracksuit tops, polo shirts, shorts and all of the other favorite clothing items from the 80’s.

As mentioned, a number of celebrities have grown fond of this style. Film director Nick Love has not been shy with his passion for the brand as he has often been seen wearing various tracksuit tops, polo shirts and shorts. His movie The Business in 2005 saw Danny Dyer and Tamer Hassan wearing different attire while another movie in 2009 was full of vintage Fila sportswear.

Adding to the Fila vintage fever is a number of additional items that can be found today such as knitwear, basic t-shirts, and stylish hats. However, it is the track jacket that continues to be seen more often than anything else within the brand. The Fila Vintage Matchday track jacket in particular has been a hot selling item. With jacket is a men’s track top from the vintage series that features contrast under-arm panels, striped hem, cuffs and collar, with branding on the chest.

Another highly popular item within the vintage collection is the Match polo shirt. This shirt includes a button fasten collar, contrast trim on the sleeves and collar, and the signature branding on the chest.

Finally, you cannot forget about the comfortable bottoms that are not only relaxing to lounge around in, but stylish enough to wear out on the town as well. The Fila vintage love sports pants have elastic waist and ends, twin pockets, and branding on the leg.

While these are just a few of the hot items from Fila vintage clothing, you can easily find just about any vintage item from the company you can imagine. From bags to shoes to track jackets and pants, Fila is one brand that will forever live in the sportswear industry.

Apple unveils new iPods, Apple TV; updates iOS, iTunes

Thursday, September 2, 2010

In a music-themed media event yesterday, Apple Inc. unveiled three new iPod portable music players, as well as an upgraded Apple TV system. Apple also announced updates for its iTunes software and iOS mobile operating system.

The annual event started at 10 a.m. PDT (1700 UTC) in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who led yesterday’s keynote speech at the event, was dressed in his typical black long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and tennis shoes. He began by discussing new international Apple Stores, an update to the company’s iOS mobile operating system, and the release of a new gaming app, Game Center. Jobs then turned his attention to what he called the “entrée” of the day.

Apple will release new versions of its iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, and iPod Touch lines next week in what Jobs called “the biggest change in the iPod line ever.” The iPod Shuffle’s VoiceOver capabilities have been extended to playlists, meaning that it will now be able to read off the names of songs, artists, and playlists. The new device is priced at US$49.

Jobs also showed off the company’s new iPod Nano. The Nano, now smaller and without a click wheel, features a new multi-touch screen that allows users to touch virtual buttons to control the device. The new design is 42 percent lighter and 46 percent smaller, but still includes functions on previous Nanos, such as an FM radio and a pedometer. The 8 GB version will cost US$149, while the 16 GB version will be priced at US$179.

Jobs announced an updated iPod Touch as well, an announcement that had been widely expected for some time. The new, thinner Touch has been upgraded with features matching some already on the company’s recently-released iPhone 4, including the high-resolution “Retina” display and dual video cameras. One camera, located on the back the of the iPod Touch, is for recording video, while the other camera, located on the front, is for use with Apple’s FaceTime video calling program. FaceTime allows users of the latest iPhone and iPod Touch models to conduct video chats with each other over Wi-Fi networks. The iPod Touch starts at US$229 for a 8 GB model, US$299 for 32 GB, and US$399 for 64 GB.

Another major product refresh unveiled yesterday was the Apple TV. The digital media receiver was first released in 2007, but was never very popular. Jobs even admitted that, although Apple has “sold a lot of them, they’ve never been a huge hit.” The US$99 second-generation Apple TV is both smaller and cheaper than its predecessor, which was priced at US$229. The new version will let consumers stream content from online sources, including Netflix, and rent both movies and television shows. Apple has made a deal with Fox and ABC to let users rent episodes of shows for 99¢, instead of buying programs. “We think the rest of the studios will see the light and get on board with this pretty fast,” added Jobs. High-definition movies can be rented for US$4.99, and the new Apple TV will be available for purchase in around four weeks.

Among the less-hyped updates was one to AirPlay, previously named AirTunes. AirPlay lets users stream music, photos, and videos from iOS devices to other Wi-Fi-enabled systems. AirPlay would let a video on an iPad be played on a television via Apple TV.

Along with an iOS update came one for Apple’s online music store application, iTunes. The biggest news involving iTunes 10, which is available for download now, is Apple’s new music-based social network, Ping. “It is sort of like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes,” described Jobs. “It is not Facebook. It is not Twitter. It is something else we’ve come up with. It’s all about music.” Built into iTunes, Ping allows a user to follow both friends and artists to find new music and concert tours, and anyone with an iTunes account will be able to access Ping upon updating to iTunes 10. Ping will have settings for privacy as well, giving users the option to approve followers. Jobs also introduced a new iTunes logo, which does not include an image of a CD on it because music sales on iTunes are expected to overtake CD sales soon.

Jobs concluded the event by bringing out Chris Martin, a member of the award-winning band Coldplay. Martin, who played a few songs on the piano, including the hit song “Yellow,” jokingly called his performance “the toughest closing gig I’ve ever had.”

Although many of yesterday’s announcements had been predicted ahead of time, some had speculated that Apple would go even further. Apple defied expectations of a new cloud-based music service. They also did not extend the amount of time a buyer could sample music on iTunes, as some had guessed.

Thai prime minister dismisses offer by anti-government protesters

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Thailand’s prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has ruled out a compromise offer by anti-government protest leaders for parliament to be dissolved in thirty days, with elections to be held in 90 days.

In a televised address on Sunday, with army chief General Anupong Paochinda at his side, the prime minister dismissed the offer made by the National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), saying such issues could not be resolved in such a short period of time, and “because they use violence and intimidation. I cannot accept this.”

Abhisit said the government stood by an offer made during earlier talks with the UDD for the house to be dissolved within the next nine months.

In reaction, the UDD, also called the Red Shirts, maintained an earlier call for parliament to be dissolved immediately. The UDD also withdrew from any further negotiations with the government. UDD leaders have repeatedly warned supporters rallying in central Bangkok’s retail and business areas of the threat of a new government crackdown.

There have been two large incidents of street violence in the past month or so, resulting in 26 deaths and injuries to hundreds of people. The Red Shirts primarily consist of supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted in a 2006 coup. He was later given a two-year prison term on charges of corruption, although Shinawatra left the country in self-exile to avoid being jailed.

Yell threatens to shut down Yellowikis

Wednesday, July 5, 2006

London — Yell, the world’s biggest yellow pages publisher, today threatened to shut down Yellowikis, the wiki-based yellow pages directory.

Yell accused Yellowikis co-founders Paul Youlten and his 15 year-old daughter Rosa Blaus of “misrepresentation”, “passing off” and suggested that using the name Yellowikis could “constitute an ‘instrument of fraud’.” Passing off is defined as misrepresenting a product and passing it off as one’s own. Passing off is a form of trademark infringement.

Yell is demanding that Paul and Rosa close down the website, transfer the domain names to Yell and agree to pay damages to Yell for loss of profits. Yell made $2.4bn in 2005, whereas Yellowikis had a loss of $500. The $500 was used to print T-shirts promoting Yellowikis at the Wikimania conference in Frankfurt.

Paul Youlten said: “This threat from Yell to shut us down looks like a sign of desperation. The whole yellow pages industry is in crisis. Use of the paper directories is collapsing as people get broadband Internet connections in their homes. Small and medium sized businesses are beginning to notice that their customers are ringing them up and saying ‘I found you on Google’ and not ‘I found you in the yellow pages’.”

Rosa Blaus said: “Maybe they are a bit jealous of Yellowikis because we allow companies to add videos, skype IDs, email addresses, instant messaging, in as many categories and languages as they like for free.” Blaus suggested to her father that they set up Yellowikis after she noticed small businesses were deleted from Wikipedia for not being “encyclopaedic”.

Yellowikis has been growing at 8.7% month-on-month and has 494 editors and about 5,000 articles listed.

The threat of legal action came after an article published in The Independent newspaper mentioned Yellowikis.
